EFL Carabao Cup 4th round preview: Liverpool vs Arsenal – Anfield – Thursday, October 1, 2020 – 19:45 hrs BST

Liverpool and Arsenal run into each other for the second time in four days to set up a fourth-round Carabao Cup clash at Anfield on Thursday night.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds will be the more confident side going into this fixture after having beaten Arsenal 3-1 at the same venue on Monday night in a Premier Leage fixture.

While Liverpool progressed to the 4th round on the back of a merciless 7-2 drubbing of Lincoln City at the LNER Stadium last week, Arsenal overcame a much tougher 3rd round fixture away at the King Power stadium when they prevailed over Leicester 2-0.

For Liverpool, new signing Thiago Alcantara had been expected to make his full debut for the club in the league, but having tested positive, the Spanish midfielder is at least ruled out for Thursday's Carabao Cup clash.

Youngsters Neco Williams, Rhys Williams, Harvey Elliott  and Curtis Jones who all started against Lincoln City will be pushing for a place in October 1st's clash.

Wolves signing Diogo Jota will expect to start on Thursday given his late cameo against the Gunners on Friday but forwards Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino were both on the scoresheet against Lincoln and will hope to keep their places in the starting XI.

A fit-again Xherdan Shaqiri will be back in contention while the likes of Jordan Henderson, Joel Matip and former Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are still sidelined by injuries.

New Arsenal signing, Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes may be preferred by Mikel Arteta over David Luiz given that the left-footed center-back has impressed from the two outings he has had for the club.

Arsenal's ability to rotate at the back has been severely curtailed by injuries to Shkodran Mustafi, Calum Chambers, Cedric Soares and Sokratis Papastathopoulos although the latter two could feature at some stage of the Anfield game.

Runar Alex Runarsson could be given a debut among the host of expected changes, with Nicolas Pepe, Bukayo Saka, Sead Kolasinac, Eddie Nketiah and Dani Ceballos among the other players who could come into the team.

Liverpool possible starting lineup:

Adrian; N Williams, Gomez, Van den Berg, Tsimikas; Jones, Grujic, Shaqiri; Elliott, Minamino, Origi

Arsenal possible starting lineup:

Runarsson; Saliba, Gabriel, Kolasinac; Cedric, Willock, Ceballos, Saka; Pepe, Nketiah, Nelson

Liverpool vs Arsenal Verdict

The Gunners have had a terrible recent history against Liverpool. Their Monday's loss was the fifth in a row at Anfield against the Reds.

The Gunners have not beaten Liverpool at Anfield in any competition since September 2012.

However the October 1st's game could be significantly different in nature to Monday's as both sides are expect to make large scale changes.

Thursday's fixture will be the 16th League Cup encounter between these two, with Liverpool leading the head-to-head with six wins to Arsenal's five.

It is expected to be a goalfest with the last 3 League Cup meetings producing as many as 22 goals.
