Schalke 04 vs Bayer Leverkusen Preview

From a place in the top four in December, Schalke04's performance in the current calendar year has deteriorated to a point where they find themselves languishing in a lowly 10th spot presently.

Their last success was a 2-0 against Borussia Monchengladbach on January 17. Since then David Wagner's men have gone through 12 games without a win. Their return from the pandemic break has been nothing short of disastrous.

The Miners have lost all but one of their 5 fixtures post the break and a win for them is looking even more elusive with a clash against a dangerous Bayer Leverkusen side coming up on Sunday, June 14th.

Peter Bosz's men having come out of a 2-4 home defeat against a brilliant Bayern Munich will now desperately seek to add three valuable points at the Veltins-Arena as they sit on equal points with Monchengladbach in the 5th place.

Leverkusen's record in away games has been exemplary. They have 10 wins on the road compared to just 7 at home and have lost only one of their last 8 away fixtures.

Peter Bosz will be further boosted by the return of his star playmaker Kai Havertz who was inexplicably rested in Saturday's clash against Bayern Munich.

Havertz has scored seven goals from his last 6 appearances and looks very likely to find the back of the Schalke net at least once on Sunday.

Leverkusen's fine away record has been blemished by its defense that occasionally comes under pressure as was evident in the defeat to Bayern.

However, Bosz's men have managed to keep 7 clean sheets this season and with Schalke able to net only twice from their previous five games, Leverkusen's goal could hardly come under any threat.

History is against Sunday's hosts, as they haven't beaten Leverkusen since a 2-0 win in 2013 at the Veltins-Arena.
