UEFA Nations League: Germany v Spain – Group A4 match preview – Mercedes-Benz Arena, Stuttgart – September 3, 2020 – 19:45 hrs

Two major European footballing powers, Germany and Spain, run into each other for their opening UEFA Nations League Group 4 fixtures on 3rd September.

Like many international sides, Germany haven't played an international game for a long time. The last time Joachim Low’s men did was was way back in November 2019 when they featured in a Euro Cup qualifier against Ireland which they won 6-1.

Die Mannschaft have so far lost just one game out of their last 12 internationals, the only defeat coming against Netherlands.

But Germany’s record in the Nations League is not something they would be proud of. They were unable to win a single match in the group stages, losing two and drawing the remaining two games, finishing at the bottom of the cluster.

Spain, on the other hand, were unable to qualify for the knockout stages despite finishing second in the group. They won 2 matches and lost two, as they finished with 6 points, one point behind group winners England.

Given their poor shows in the inaugural edition of this competition, both teams will be eager to prove a point and reclaim their dominance in Europe.

Spain, under former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique, have adopted an attacking edge to their game as evinced from the 18 goals they have scored from their last 5 games that included 7 against Malta and 5 against Romania.

Their defense has been solid what names like Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal and Jesus Navas at the back.

The midfield will be manned by two of the best in the business, viz. Thiago Alcantara and Sergio Busquets while the attack will be in the hands of Marco Asensio, Ansu Fati and Rodrigo.

The industrious winger Adama Traore of Wolverhampton will miss out on Thursday night's clash owing to coronavirus.

On the other hand, the Germans have been in fine fettle at the international level having scored 17 goals in their last 5 games while conceding only 2 times in the process. Low has managed to turn things around after their abysmal World Cup campaign in 2018.

They are now a much different team to the one that struggled in the previous Nations League. The emergence of exciting players including the likes of Chelsea new boy Timo Werner and Chelsea target Kai Havertz has lent a new sheen to the outfit.

But going into the clash with Spain, Low will be without key players like Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Manuel Neuer, Serge Gnabry, Lukas Klostermann and Marcel Halstenberg.

This could be a fantastic clash between two international teams with such exciting young talent.

This game could go either way, but the hosts hold a slight edge, even without many players from the Bayern & Leipzig contingents absent.

With the attack-minded individuals available to either side, the game should be a high-scoring one with odds of over 2.5 goals scored and a German win going at 13/10.
