Tottenham v Arsenal Preview

With only 4 games to go in the 2019-20 Premier League season, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal face each other in a North London derby for an ultimate place in the Top 8 and a Europa League entry.

Jose Mourinho's Spurs have come out of a 0-0 draw against relegation candidates Bournemouth at Vitality Park, a match where they were expected to take three easy points.

But a lethargic and uninspiring Lilywhites were able to garner just a point from Thursday's game against the Cherries, leaving them one behind 8th placed Arsenal's 50 – which is what makes the 12th July clash at Tottenham stadium so critical.

Prior to the draw at Bournemouth, Tottenham lost 3-1 to Sheffield United before claiming a 1-0 home win against Everton thanks to a Michael Keane own goal.

Arsenal's last match was a 1-1 draw against Leicester City and the Gunners were unfortunate to concede the late equalizer after they were reduced to 10 men in the 70th minute of play – substitute Eddie Nketiah being controversially red-carded.

This apart, Mikel Arteta's side have been one of the most improved in the Premier League over recent weeks, registering victories over Wolves, Sheffield United, Southampton and Norwich in rapid succession.

The team news for  Tottenham is that Eric Dier will not feature in Sunday's derby clash owing to a four-match suspension slapped on him for a confrontation with a supporter in the stands.

Defenders Japhet Tanganga and Juan Foyth are ruled out and a still struggling Dele Alli (hamstring injury) looks very doubtful.

Arsenal will still be without long-term absentees Gabriel Martinelli, Mesut Ozil, Calum Chambers, Bernd Leno and Pablo Mari while striker Nketiah will be under a two-match suspension.

The Gunners may have rectified one of their biggest weaknesses – their normally poor showings on the road.

Back-to-back wins against the Wolves, Sheffield United and Southampton are testimonies to their revival in away games.

Spurs will not want to lose the first north London derby at home but without Eric Dier around, their defence will look suspect, something that will give Arsenal hope going into the game and encourage the likes of encourage the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Nicolas Pepe and Alexandre Lacazette.

Barring the late equalizer conceded in the drawn game against Leicester, the Gunners have maintained clean sheets in all of their three outings prior to that, underlining Emiliano Marinez's commendable work between the posts in the absence of regular goalie Bernd Leno.

Without Del Alli not around, the onus upfront for the Spurs will be on forwards Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura all of whom have been below par since their return from the pandemic break.

The last two meetings between these two have ended in draws of 1-1 and 2-2, but with Arsenal’s form on the ascendance, the visitors to the Tottenham stadium on Sunday look likely to pick up three points – although the odds suggest a even-stevens affair.
