RB Leipzig v SC Freiburg Preview

RB Leipzig will resume their title challenge as they try to close the 5-point gap with Bayern Munich when they host SC Freiburg at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday, May the 16th.

Die Roten Bullen would have performed much better than the third place they are in had not it been for the profusion of drawn games in their last six Bundesliga outings.

Apart from two emphatic wins of 3-0 and 0-5 against Werder Bremen and Schalke 04, coach Julian Nagelsmann's side played out draws against Borussia Monchengladbach, Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and VfL Wolfsburg – although one must admit that three of their opponents in the drawn games were top-rated opposition.

Speaking of Leipzig's fitness front, centre back and captain Willi Orban will be out with an injury and will miss the start of Bundesliga fixtures on the 16th clash. Fellow central defender Ibrahima Konate could return from injury alongside midfielders Kevin Kampl and Tyler Adams.

SC Freiburg started the 2019-20 season on a bright note, winning half of their first 12 games and losing only two – a performance that helped them stay inside the Top Four.

But the latter half of the season was a different story as the Southern German club stumbled to as many as 7 defeats in the remaining 13 games before the season was interrupted and slipped to the 8th spot, thus putting their chances for the next season's Europa Cup in peril.

As far as team news for Freiburg goes, defender Lukas Kubler could be in for shot alongside midfielders Chang-Hoon Kwon and Amir Abrashi. All three had chances to recover in the two-month break, but their participation in Saturday's clash looks doubtful.

Roland Sallai, Christian Gunter, Vincenzo Grifo and Robin Koch will be the players to watch out for at the Red Bull arena on May 16.

Leipzig are blessed with a strong and deep squad with options in players like Christopher Nkunku, Dani Olmo, Marcel Sabitzer and Emil Forsberg in the midfield who can lend support to some of the best attackers in the business like Timo Werner, Yussuf Poulsen and Patrik Schick.

For Freiburg, Leipzig striker Werner will be a thorn in their side having scored 7 goals in his last 7 Bundesliga appearances against them.

Leipzig are strong at home and have won six of their last eight home matches. Freiburg surprisingly has a good history against Leipzig when it comes to recent encounters. They have managed to overpower their powerful weekend opponents in three of the previous four meetings with their last meeting in Freiburg ending with a 2-1 victory.

Leipzig have seen over 2.5 goals in their last eight matches against Freiburg and over 3.5 goals in 6 of their last 8 Bundesliga home matches. Both Teams have scored in seven of the last nine encounters and odds of over 2.5 goals are very high. But the hosts are surely the new betting sites ‘ favorites for Saturday's game at the Red Bull Arena.
