De Bruyne ready to face Burnley?
Updated: 23/06/2022
Midfielder Kevin de Bruyne could be set to make his return against Burnley today according to Man City boss Pep Guardiola. The dynamic Belgian has been out of action for City since picking up a knee injury during a training session just two weeks into the 2018/19 season.
Kevin de Bruyne was pivotal to Manchester City's success last season, which ended in the club lifting the Premier League trophy with a record number of points (100), wins (32), and goals scored (106). The 27-year-old was one of a number of players that led City's title charge, emerging as a world beating playmaker, and helping the Citizens administer Pep Guardiola's unique brand of attacking football upon the Premier League with deadly effect. De Bruyne ended the 2017/18 season with eight league goals and 16 assists, consolidating his place amongst the Premier League's greatest ever central midfielders.
Needless to say, the announcement that de Bruyne was likely to remain sidelined for the first three months of the season, was met with bitter disappointment from Man City fans and indeed Pep Guardiola. Yet so far this season, City have managed to remain competitive.
Heading into MD9, the Citizens sit top of the Premier League table, having won six and drawn two of their opening eight fixtures. It appears that the club could be set for a huge boost today, with reports that De Bruyne may be available for their match against Burnley. The 27-year-old is reported to have remained at City during the recent international break, and received a fitness test earlier this week, to determine if he was ready to return to first team action.
When asked if the Belgian could feature against Burnley, Pep Guardiola said: “I don't know. I don't know if he's able to play 90 minutes but he's trained really well over the last two weeks, he has no pain so he is ready to be part of the group.
“He's such an important player for us. Every player who is out I like when they come back with us because we are a stronger group. There is no doubt how important Kevin is for us.”
