Man City go to the top of the Premier League Table; West Ham, Arsenal continue fine run
West Bromwich Albion 0, Manchester City 5 – The Hawthorns
A first-half double strike by Ilkay Gundogan helped Pep Guardiola's City drub West Brom 0-5 away at the Hawthorns and reach the summit of the Premier League. The visitors didn't miss a beat while getting into the act as Gundogan turned and fired home in the 6th minute from a Joao Cancelo pass that completely eluded the defense.
Cancelo was in the thick of action as he doubled the lead in the 20th minute with a brilliant curling shot from the edge of the box. Gundogan, playing in a false-nine role in the absence of the injured Kevin de Bruyne, got his second of the night and City's third in the 30th when he dispossessed Romaine Sawyers at the edge of the box before foxing Dara O'Shea to fire past a hapless West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone.
The chances for City kept coming as Guardiola’s men found one more at the stroke of half-time. Raheem Sterling ran unchecked into the area before picking up Riyad Mahrez who swept wonderfully to the top corner to make it 0-4 in the 45th minute.
City's domination continued post the interval with Rodri's 25-yard drive clipping the bar while a 5th goal arrived after in the 57th minute. Mahrez was the provider this time to Rodri whose lofted pass found Sterling only for the English forward to finish from close range for his ninth goal of the season. City's Hawthorns win lifts them to a top of the Premier League table and a point ahead of Manchester United after 19 games.
Southampton 1, Arsenal 3 – St. Mary's stadium
Goals from Nicolas Pepe, Bukayo Saka and Alexandre Lacazette propelled the Gunners into the top half of the Premier League for the first time since mid-November, even as they humbled Southampton 1-3 at the St. Mary's stadium on Wednesday night.
In a frantic first half, Arsenal should have been ahead within a minute as Granit Xhaka played Lacazette through on goal, but the Frenchman was denied by Saints keeper Alex McCarthy, who rushed out to deny him in a one-on-one situation.
But it was Southampton who opened the scoring with Stuart Armstrong's finish from a James Ward-Prowse corner finding the back of the net in the 4th minute of play. Four minutes later, the visitors equalized through Pepe who turned one in from a Xhaka through ball.
Arsenal found their rhythm as Cedric Soares volleyed inches wide after some good work from Saka.
Saka then put the Gunners ahead in the 39th minute when he deftly rounded goalkeeper McCarthy from Lacazette's threaded ball to slot in. The Gunners deservedly got their third with the move coming from Cedric who had a remarkable night.
The Portuguese right-back's fine crossfield ball found Saka whose first-time delivery across the face of goal was met by Lacazette under the crossbar to just tap in. The Gunners who were only three places away from relegation during Christmas have registered their fifth win from the last six outings.
For the Saints, it has been a downward journey from being in the Top Four till November and now finding themselves pipped out of the top half to the 11th spot.
Crystal Palace 2, West Ham 3 – Selhurst Park
David Moyes’ Hammers registered their sixth win in succession across all competitions as they overcame Crystal Place 2-3 away at Selhurst Park in a Premier League fixture on January 26th night. Palace went ahead in the 3rd minute through their talisman Wilfried Zaha as he took a pass in his stride and stroked the ball inside the near post past Hammers custodian Lukasz Fabianski.
The Eagles' early lead was short-lived as a clipped ball from Pablo Fornals found Antonio on the byline and the latter's flick was perfect for Tomas Soucek to slot home the equaliser from close range with barely 9 minutes of the game gone.
Antonio came close to doubling the lead from a Cheikhou Kouyate pass but his attempt hit the base of the far post with Palace custodian Vincente Guaita completely beaten. The free-scoring Soucek added one more for the Hammers in the 25th minute when he turned one in from Aaron Cresswell's free-kick.
Palace could have equalized when Eberechi Eze's through-ball found Zaha but the Ivorian's attempt from a tight angle was well-dealt with by Fabianski. The Hammers sealed their win in the 65th minute when Craig Dawson met Jarrod Bowen's corner to head home to make it 1-3.
Moyes' men sat back in the closing stages for which they were punished when Mitchy Batshuayi fired home from close-range 7 minutes into injury time. The win catapulted the Hammers to the 4th place after 20 games while Palace slipped further down to the 13th.
