Roger Federer is out of the US Open after losing to Grigor Dimtrov in a thrilling late-night quarter final encounter in New York (Nadal 1/3 US Open Outright).
Dimitrov had never beaten Federer in seven previous meetings but the unseeded Bulgarian came through 3-6 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-2 and will now face Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals.
The exit of the 38-year-old has further strengthened Rafael Nadal’s chances of winning his 19th Grand Slam event. With Novak Djokovic also out, the Spaniard will be feeling confident.
Medvedev had to play through the pain barrier to book his place in the semi-finals, beating Stan Wawrinka 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 3-6 6-1.
However after picking up a quadriceps injury in the first set, he needed painkillers and heavy strapping to get through.
In the ladies side of the draw, there were no such issues for Serena Williams, who cruised through in just 44 minutes, beating China’s Wang Qiang 6-1 6-0.
She will face Ukraine’s fifth seed Elina Svitolina, who beat Britain’s Johanna Konta, in the last-four.
Konta put up a brave fight when losing 6-4 6-4 but admitted afterwards that her opponent was just too good on the day.
Wednesday’s action will see the men’s semi-final line up completed as Matteo Berrettini takes on Gael Monfils in the first quarter-final encounter (Berrettini 13/8, Monfils 1/2 Match Betting).
Then it is the turn of Nadal, who will be looking to avoid an upset against Diego Schwartzman in the late-night clash (Schwartzman 9/1, Nadal 1/25 Match Betting).
In the remaining ladies quarter-finals Belinda Bencic (8/15) will take on Donna Vekic (6/4), before Bianca Andreescu (1/2) faces Elise Mertsens (13/8).
