Navigating Bovada’s NFL Betting Options: A Guide for Newcomers
Updated: 06/10/2024
The first time I logged into Bovada to bet on an NFL game, I was immediately overwhelmed. As a lifelong NFL fan, I thought I’d have a natural advantage. I’d watched countless games, kept up with player stats, and could talk for hours about team matchups. But Bovada’s interface was filled with unfamiliar terms like “moneyline,” “parlay,” and “over/under.” Suddenly, my confidence wavered. I wasn’t just picking winners anymore; I was navigating a whole new world of options. My first experience as a newcomer was eye-opening, and I soon realized that betting on Bovada required more than just football knowledge—it demanded strategy, patience, and a willingness to learn.
My initial instinct was to stick with the simplest option: the moneyline bet. A moneyline bet, I quickly learned, is the most straightforward type of wager. You’re simply betting on which team will win the game, regardless of the score. No point spreads, no other factors—just win or lose.
I figured this would be the easiest way to start, and so I placed my first bet. I went with a team I was confident in, based on my understanding of their season’s performance, and eagerly awaited the game. It felt like a manageable way to dip my toes into Bovada’s NFL betting waters without getting too complicated.
That first moneyline bet turned out well, and it gave me the confidence to explore Bovada’s other options.
The next term I encountered was the “point spread,” which seemed to be one of the most popular betting formats.
I was intrigued, but also a bit confused. Betting against the spread meant that I wasn’t just betting on who would win, but by how much.
For example, if the spread was -6.5 in favor of a team, that team would need to win by more than 6.5 points for the bet to pay out.
If they won but didn’t cover the spread, I’d lose the bet, even if they were victorious on the field. This was a new concept for me, and it added a layer of complexity that I hadn’t anticipated.
Suddenly, I wasn’t just rooting for my team to win—I was watching the scoreboard, calculating point differences, and hoping for extra touchdowns late in the game. The spread turned out to be both exhilarating and nerve-wracking.
Once I got the hang of point spreads, I started to hear a lot about “over/under” bets.
Curious, I decided to dive in. An over/under bet is based on the total number of points scored by both teams in a game.
Bovada sets a predicted total, and you simply bet on whether the actual score will be over or under that number. It sounded simple enough, and it was a fun way to engage with games where I didn’t necessarily care who won.
For instance, in a game between two high-scoring teams, I might bet the over, hoping for a shootout, while in a game between defensive powerhouses, I’d go for the under, expecting a low-scoring slugfest.
The beauty of over/under bets is that you’re not tied to a specific team—you’re just rooting for (or against) points being scored. This type of bet added a different dynamic to my NFL Sundays, where even a meaningless field goal in the final minutes could dramatically affect the outcome of my wager.
Feeling more comfortable with these basic bets, I decided to take on the next challenge: the “parlay.”
Parlays, as I quickly learned, are high-risk, high-reward bets that combine multiple individual wagers into one bet.
The catch?
You have to win all of your bets for the parlay to pay out.
At first, it seemed like a fun way to increase my potential winnings.
Why not stack three or four bets together? If they all hit, the payout would be significantly higher than if I had placed those bets separately. But it didn’t take long for me to understand why parlays are considered so risky. One misstep, one team failing to cover the spread or a last-minute upset, and the entire bet is lost.
My first few parlays didn’t go as planned, and I realized that while the potential for a big win was enticing, I needed to be selective and strategic about which bets to combine.
As I continued to explore Bovada’s offerings, I stumbled upon “prop bets.”
These bets aren’t tied to the overall outcome of the game, but to specific events within it. For example, you can place a bet on how many touchdowns a certain player will score or how many yards a quarterback will throw for. At first, prop bets seemed like a gimmick—more for fun than serious betting.
But the more I got into them, the more I appreciated the level of detail they required. I started researching individual player performances, matchups, and tendencies. Prop bets allowed me to get granular with my betting strategy, and suddenly, games that I might have ignored became much more interesting.
Betting on a specific player’s performance in a low-stakes game gave me a reason to care about even the most mundane matchups.
As a newcomer, it was clear that Bovada’s NFL betting options were vast, and each type of bet had its own learning curve.
There were moments of frustration, especially early on when I made rookie mistakes—betting too emotionally, not researching enough, or getting swept up in the excitement of a parlay without fully understanding the risks.
But over time, I realized that the key to successful betting wasn’t necessarily about predicting every outcome perfectly. It was about being informed, staying disciplined, and understanding the nuances of each bet.
I also learned the importance of bankroll management. When I first started, it was easy to get carried away, especially after a big win. But those wins could just as easily turn into losses if I wasn’t careful.
I set strict limits for myself, making sure that betting remained a fun and exciting addition to my NFL experience, rather than a source of stress. This discipline allowed me to enjoy the thrill of each bet without risking more than I was comfortable losing.
In the end, my journey through Bovada’s NFL betting options taught me that while knowledge of the sport is important, betting is a game of strategy and patience.
I’m still learning, still refining my approach, but each week brings new insights and new ways to engage with the sport I love.
Bovada turned my NFL Sundays into something more than just a viewing experience—it became an interactive challenge that heightened my excitement for every game, every play, and every outcome.
