Kentucky Oaks Points Leaders Listed
Midnight Bisou
Midnight Bisou is inbred 5×5 to Secretariat. Her sire, Midnight Lute, won back to back runnings of the G1 BC Sprint at 6 furlongs. However, his sire, Real Quiet, missed winning the 1998 TC by a nose when caught by Victory Gallop at the wire in the G1 Belmont S. Midnight Bisou's broodmare sire is Repent, who won the G2 Louisiana Derby at then 1 1/16 miles, then ran 2nd to War Emblem in the 2002 G2 Illinois Derby at 1 1/8 miles, and then ran 2nd to Medaglia D'Oro in the G1 Travers S and was gaining at the wire.
Midnight Bisou has done nothing wrong in five career starts but now she will need to prove she can chase down the type of fillies who will not quit. The 1 1/8 mile distance should not pose a problem for her. Her consistency makes her the one to beat. 5 Starts 3 Wins 2 Seconds.
Monomoy Girl
Monomoy Girl is inbred 5×4 to Seattle Slew. Her sire Tapizar, won the 2012 G1 BC Dirt Mile in his last career start by pressing the pace and pulling away in the stretch at 15-1. Monomoy Girl's broodmare sire, Henny Hughes, won the G1 Vosburgh S at 6 furlongs, G1 King's Bishop S at 7 furlongs but is best remembered for his 2nd in the 2005 G1 BC Juvenile at 1 1/16 mile to 2 YO champion Stevie Wonderboy. Monomoy Girl has speed to burn and will be the one to chase down. She has been caught only once in six career starts and she was caught at the wire by a neck. 6 Starts 5 Wins 1 Second.
Sassy Sienna
Sassy Sienna is inbred 5×3 to Mr Prospector and 5×5 to Prince John. Her sire, Midshipman, won the G1 Del Mar Futurity at 7 furlongs and the G1 BC Juvenile Dirt at 1 1/16 miles, both on California's all weather tracks, on his way to being named Champion 2 YO in 2008. However, he is also a 1/2 brother to Frosted. Sassy Sienna's broodmare sire, Pleasant Tap, ran 3rd in the 1990 G1 Kentucky Derby to Unbridled & Summer Squall, and many other top races and concluded his career with a 2nd to A.P. Indy in the 1992 BC Classic.
Pleasant Tap's 1/2 brother, Go For Gin, also won the 1994 Ky Derby before running 2nd in both the Preakness & Belmont S, caught late both times by Tabasco Cat. Sassy Sienna has yet to face a field of this caliber and she will need to show big improvement to be a factor, though she has bloodlines that would make her no real surprise. 9 Starts 3 Wins 2 Seconds 2 Thirds.
My Miss Lilly
My Miss Lilly is inbred 4(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Mr Prospector and 5×5 to Honest Pleasure. Her sire, Tapit, won the G1 Wood Memorial at 1 1/8 miles and has been a top sire for over a decade. Her broodmare sire, Harlan's Holiday, was the beaten favorite in the 2002 G1 Ky Derby but won races such as the G1 Florida Derby, G1 Blue Grass S, G1 Donn H, all at 1 1/8 miles and ran 2nd in the G1 Hollywood Gold Cup and G1 Dubai World Cup, both at 1 1/4 miles. My Miss Lilly is one of the few lined up to the Ky Oaks that has already won at the 1 1/8 miles distance. With her bloodlines, she is one I will have to give serious thoughts to. 4 Starts 2 Wins 2 Thirds.
Chocolate Martini
Chocolate Martini is inbred 5×4 to In Reality. Her sire, Broken Vow, won 9 of 14 lifetime starts with his biggest win coming in the G2 Philip H Iselin H at 1 1/8 miles. While he always seemed to be a cut below some of Unbridled's other sons, he has sired a few runners that has blown up the exotics in major races when you least expect them to.
Chocolate Martini's broodmare sire, Successful Appeal, won the G2 Withers S at one mile but was best known as a sprinter and most of his foals were much better at sprinting than mid distance runners, with one noted exception. His son, Closing Argument, ran 2nd in the 2005 G1 Ky Derby at 71-1. While Chocolate Martini has improved since stretched to two turns on dirt, she will need to run a race she has not proven she can run. A likely pace factor only.
Coach Rocks
Coach Rocks is inbred 5×4 to Northern Dancer. Her sire, Oxbow, won the 2013 G1 Preakness S and ran 2nd in the G1 Belmont S, both while setting the early pace. Her dam, Mexican Moonlight won the Old South S at 1 1/16 miles on grass at La. Downs for her only stakes win. Coach Rocks broodmare sire, El Prado, won the G1 National S, G2 Beresford S, and G3 Railway S in Ireland as a 2 YO and all grass sprints. Sent to the U.S. for breeding purposes after disappointing as a 3 YO, he is best known as sire of Medaglia D'Oro, Kitten's Joy & Paddy O'Prado, the latter 2 Champion Grass Horses as 3 YOs.
Coach Rocks took seven starts to break her maiden as the trainer look like he was trying to figure out her best surface and style of running. She is improving but needs to take another big step forward to beat several of these.
Rayya
Rayya is inbred 4×4 to Mr Prospector & 5×5 to Tom Rolfe. Her sire, Tiz Wonderful, won his first three starts including the G2 Ky Jockey Club S at 1 1/16 mile and the G3 Iroquois S at one mile before being injured and never returned to form. Rayya's broodmare sire, Coronado's Quest, won 10 of 19 lifetime starts including the G1 Haskell S at 1 1/8 miles, G1 Travers S at 1 1/4 miles, and the G2 Wood Memorial S at 1 1/8 miles, beating both Victory Gallop & Grand Slam in the first 2 tests. Rayya has been turned over to Baffert to train in the U. S. and she will most likely will contest the early pace in the Oaks. However, her final times in both the UAE Derby and UAE Oaks seems a cut below the major contenders in here.
Wonder Gadot
Wonder Gadot is a complete outcross in her first five generations. Her sire, Medaglia D'Oro, is notorious for siring top class fillies and she is no exception. Wonder Gadot's broodmare sire, Vindication, won all four of his starts including the 2002 G1 BC Juvenile and was retired shortly after due to an injury. Wonder Gadot's only off the board finish came in the G1 BC Juvenile Fillies when she was making a huge move into contention when she had to check and alter course in mid stretch. Definitely has the bloodlines to succeed and you will probably get decent odds. My pick to win the Oaks.
Eskimo Kisses
Eskimo Kisses is inbred 5×4 to Mr Prospector and 5×5 to Secretariat. Her sire, To Honor And Serve, won the G1 Woodward S, and G2 Pennsylvania Derby at 1 1/8 miles and the G1 Cigar Mile H. Her dam, Silver Colors is a daughter of 1988 Ky Derby winner Winning Colors but did not win in 4 starts on grass in Europe.
Winning Colors came from one of the classiest 3 YO filly crops in recent memory, won the G1 SA Derby, beating colts by 9 lengths and was caught at the wire in the G1 BC Distaff by undefeated 4 YO champion Personal Ensign. Eskimo's Kisses broodmare sire, Mr Greeley, won several G3 sprints but also ran 2nd in the G1 BC Sprint in his final career start. Mr Greeley's dam, Long Legend, is a close relative of Ruffian and the 3rd dam of 2007 G1 Ky Derby winner Street Sense. With bloodlines that has four major fillies lines on her dam side, she is a must consider for me.
Take Charge Paula
Take Charge Paula is inbred 5×4 to Blushing Groom & 5×5 to Fappiano. Her sire, Take Charge Indy, won the G1 Florida Derby in wire to wire fashion. Her broodmare sire, Songandaprayer, won the G2 Fountain Of Youth S at 1 1/16 miles from gate to wire and set the fastest pace in Ky Derby history before fading. Take Charge Paula, like both her sire & broodmare sire, produces their best race when they get the lead and can control the pace. I do not see that happening in this race. Pass.
Cosmic Burst
Cosmic Burst is inbred 5×5 to Northern Dancer & Blushing Groom. Her sire, Violence, is a son of Medaglia D'Oro and won the G1 CashCall Futurity on Hollywood Park's all weather track and his only loss in 4 starts came when he ran 2nd in the G2 Fountain Of Youth S to Orb which he came out of that race with an injury and was retired. Cosmic Burst's broodmare sire, Ghostzapper, won 9 of 11 lifetime starts including the G1 BC Classic & G1 Metropolitan Mile H. Cosmic Burst certainly has the pedigree to win this race but will need to up her game and both her grandsire and broodmare sire got better in the latter part of their 3 YO seasons.
Blamed
Blamed is inbred 4×5 to Roberto & Mr Prospector, and 5(C)x5(C)x5(F)x5(F) to Northern Dancer. Her sire, Blame, won 9 of 13 starts including the G1 BC Classic beating Zenyatta. Her broodmare sire, Giant's Causeway, was European Horse Of The Year in 2000 and also ran 2nd in the G1 BC Classic in his only attempt on dirt to Tiznow. Blamed has won 5 of 6 lifetime starts but she has yet to beat the caliber of horses she will face in the Ky Oaks. She has the bloodlines, and will be only a matter if she is ready to compete against these.
Amy's Challenge
Amy's Challenge is a complete outcross in her first five generations. Her sire, Artie Schiller, performed much better on grass during his racing career and won the G1 BC Turf Mile & G2 Bernard Baruch H at 1 1/8 mile on grass. However, his best races were at one mile or less. Amy's Challenge's dam, Jump Up, won all three of her lifetime starts, all in gate to wire fashion, though she did not try stakes company. Her broodmare sire, Jump Start, won the G2 Saratoga Special and ran 2nd in the G1 Champagne S. Strictly a pace factor and not likely to finish in top half of field.
Patrona Margarita
Patrona Margarita is inbred 4×3 to Mr Prospector, 4(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Northern Dancer & 5×5 to Nearctic. Her sire, Special Rate, is a son of Pulpit and won one small stakes at one mile on grass at Hollywood Park. However, his dam, Viviana, hails from the exact same dam line as Winning Colors(Chris Evert) and Viviana is dam of two G1 winning fillies at 1 1/8 miles in Tates Creek and Sightseek and another unraced daughter who has produced a multiple G1 winning miler filly in England & France.
Patrona Margarita broodmare sire, Naevus, was a son of Mr Prospector and did not win a stakes race in 8 starts but did run 2nd in the 1983 G2 San Felipe S and the G3 San Rafael S to eventual 2nd place finisher in that year's Ky Derby and Preakness S Desert Wine and third in the G1 Santa Anita Derby, beating Desert Wine. Definitely one I will include in my exotics wagers at huge odds.
Classy Act
Classy Act is inbred 5×5 to Halo. Her sire, Into Mischief, is a half brother to Beholder and this year's Ky Derby entry Mendelssohn. Classy Act's broodmare sire, Distorted Humor, won the G3 Salvator Mile H and ran 2nd in the G2 Jerome H, also at a mile. However, he was the sire of 2003 Ky Derby & Preakness winner Funny Cide. Classy Act's first two dams did not win but her 3rd dam, Colour Chart, was dam of Tempera, who won the G1 BC Juvenile Fillies in one of the fastest final times ever for that stakes but colic and died one week before the Ky Oaks where she was expected to go off at less than even money. Should be a speed factor only and could help set the race up for her stablemate.
Princess Warrior
Princess Warrior is inbred 4×3 to Gana Facil(dam of Unbridled). Her sire, Midshipman, won the G1 2008 BC Juvenile S and is a 1/2 brother to Frosted. Her broodmare sire, Consolidator, is a royally bred son of Storm Cat and won the G1 Breeders Futurity and the G2 San Felipe S, both at 1 1/16 miles in fast final times. However, Princess Warrior has not even came close to producing a race that will make her competitive against these. Pass.
Virginia Key
Virginia Key is inbred 3×5 to Mr Prospector & 4×5 to Northern Dancer. Her sire, Distorted Humor, was best as a sprinter/miler during his racing career but he did sire 2003 Ky Derby & Preakness winner Funny Cide. Virginia Key's dam, Our Khrysty, won the G3 Turnback The Alarm S at 1 1/16 miles and ran 2nd in the G2 Top Flight H at one mile. Her broodmare sire, Newfoundland, is another royally bred son of Storm Cat. His biggest stakes win came in the G3 Skip Away S at 1 1/16 miles but he also ran 2nd in the G1 Suburban H, G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup & G2 Gulfstream Park H, all at 1 1/4 miles. With a little more racing experience, she would be higher on my list but this is asking a lot of a young filly with only 3 starts.
Red Ruby
Red Ruby is inbred 4×5 to In Reality & Foggy Note, and 5(C)x5(C)x5(F)x5(F) to Northern Dancer. Her sire, Tiznow, is the only 2 time winner of the G1 BC Classic at 1 1/4 miles. Her broodmare sire, Rubiano, was a champion sprinter/ miler in his racing career and his biggest win came in the G1 NYRA Mile H(now Cigar Mile H) and he also ran 2nd in the G1 Metropolitan Mile H to In Excess(sire of Indian Charlie and grandsire of Uncle Mo). Another that appears to be overmatched against these at this time.
Heavenhasmynikki
Heavenhasmynikki is inbred 4×4 to Mr Prospector, 5×5 to Northern Dancer, and 4(C)x5(C)x5(F)x5(F) to Secretariat. Her sire, Majestic Warrior, a son of A.P. Indy and filly sprint champion Dream Supreme, won the 7 furlongs G1 Hopeful S for his only stakes win. Her broodmare sire, Forest Wildcat, is another son of Storm Cat whose trainer kept him in smaller sprint stakes throughout his racing career. Don't believe she is ready to beat this type. Pass.
Stronger Than Ever
Stronger Than Ever is inbred 4×5 to Northern Dancer & 5×5 to Boldnesian. Her sire, Congrats, is a full brother to Flatter and his biggest win came in the G2 San Pasqual S at 1 1/16 miles but he also ran 2nd in the G1 Santa Anita H and 3rd in the G1 Hollywood Gold Cup. Her broodmare sire, Broken Vow, won the G2 Philip H Iselin H at 1 1/8 miles for his biggest stakes win and as I mentioned earlier, his foals seems to jump up and blow up the exotics when you least expect them to. This one has ran a couple races that could make her competitive in here, but I like others better.
C.S. Incharge
C.S. Incharge is inbred 5×4 to Fappiano. Her sire, Take Charge Indy, won the G1 Florida Derby at 1 1/8 miles from gate to wire and the G2 Alysheba S at 1 1/16 miles. Her broodmare sire, Unbridled's Song, won the G1 BC Juvenile at 1 1/16 miles, the G1 Florida Derby & G2 Wood Memorial S at 1 1/8 miles and was the beaten favorite in the 1996 Kentucky Derby when fifth. C. S. Incharge looks like she wants things to go her way as far as pace is concerned and I do not see that happening here. Pass.
Here is the points leaders listed in order for this year's Kentucky Oaks. Unlike the Kentucky Derby, there are very few that can be eliminated through breeding but more can be eliminated through their running lines and class. My top four will be Midnight Bisou, Wonder Gadot, Eskimo Kisses and Patrona Margarita. I will also try to fit My Miss Lilly into a few of my exotic boxes. I feel the rest will have to run a race that I do not see them running to be a factor.
