Grand National 2019 Ante Postcast

Updated: 18/02/2025

Maddy Playle, Tom Segal, Nick Watts and Bet365's Darren Hughes with a horse-by-horse ante-post guide to the Grand National 2019 at Aintree.

On the show:
– It's the biggest jumps race of the year, but will Grand National favourite Tiger Roll set off at the shortest price in it's history? Or does the price reflect the champion's dominance over the field?

– There's a strong lineup of Irish horses with the likes of Rathvinden, Pairofbrowneyes and Pleasant Company skipping Cheltenham with to focus on the race – can Step Back, Vintage Clouds or Lake View Lad step up to the challenge?

– The team pick some outsiders to look at, and have some tips for the Foxhunters Chase, while Tom Segal is a little worried about Altior in the Melling Chase…

  1. Road Runner says:

Anybody any thoughts on Don poli at 100/1 ??
Is it even worth an each way bet ?

  2. cookupastorm says:

The bookies are a bunch of cheap skates. Even Red Rum was 7/1 at best and Tiger Roll is no Red Rum. Not taking away anything from Tiger Roll, there'll never be another Rummy.

  3. David Rigg says:

If there’s one horse in training that ideally wants a 5m race it’s Folsom Blue. It’ll get 4m 2 on softish ground. That’ll do.

  4. Paul Best says:

Maldini and walk in the mill each way

  5. Ryan Perry says:

    7/2 is shocking . You’d rather take a horse e/w at a bigger price

  6. Rathvinden will go very close

  7. news now uk says:

question you must ask is why are these tipsters not pro punters instead of newspaper tipsters if they are that good at picking horses. it's a bookies mug money horse to get the once a year punters. of course tiger roll is a good horse but 7-2 no way also carrying 11-05 lbs much harder.

  8. There must be at 20 horses well handicapped in this race so that doesn't help these newspaper tipsters all work for the bookies I'm sure of it pick your own fancy don't listen to this lot Every horse they mention has a question mark over it they couldn't tip rubbish

  9. Nearly all the horses fall so there’s no guarantee

Now for the impartial bookie free view. lol

  11. George Mc says:

At the moment it’s vintage clouds, one for Arthur and yala enki for me

Tom you have either lost your mind or received a serious envolope.

  13. Mr Cool says:

    Has Tom lost the plot?

  14. Craig Wilson says:

Vintage Clouds or Warriors Tale for Trevor Hemmings to upset Tiger Roll. No chance I'd be betting a horse at that price in race like this.

  15. Tom Segal talks tosh about only 10 – 13 horses having any chance. 40 starters=plenty of chances to get bought down/hampered. Owners entering horses into this race pay good money and will not splosh out on a no-hoper.

  16. billyblooboy says:

What is the point it is just another race people just get drawn in oooh,,Grand national .Odds are odds what is the difference what the race is there are 7/2winners in races every day and a lot less risk involved .Screw the national .And how that moron can sit there and say there is 30 in there that wont win it well if there is one race to throw up a huge priced winner it is the bloody National .Regardless of the outcome it is a bookies benefit race ,as is much of the meeting .The one line of form to look for is horses that like speedy run races where they go too fast for the first half and runners returning to the meeting from last year that ran well .And another thing short priced runners are always bigger odds when in running on the day in all the races

  17. take 7/2 no way..its a hold up horse as well..luck in running 2 yrs running is asking a lot for a 7/2 shot

  18. kanerfc1 says:

I like maddie but she cut a couple of very good and interesting debates short.poor in my opinion, let them voice their opinion please.

  19. if nick watts had a lot of money on tiger roll in last years national, he would have been crapping himself as pleasant company bore down on a weakening tiger roll.
if 'company' is better off at the weights this year, he must be a good bet.
