Race Preview

Gleneagle Bay looks ready to make amends after enduring a nightmare passage in Tuesday's valuable mile handicap. Stephen Thorne's six-year-old travelled strongly throughout but repeatedly met trouble in running before finishing a close sixth, and the drop back to his optimum 7f looks ideal. He finished second in this race last year and now has Dylan Browne McMonagle, one of the meeting's standout jockeys, taking over in the saddle. With a smoother trip, he can gain a deserved success.

Pierre Royal rates the chief danger. The progressive four-year-old won impressively at the Curragh before chasing home Orandi over a mile here earlier in the week. Although this shorter trip poses a slight question, he remains unexposed and is entitled to improve further after only a handful of handicap starts.

Jagged Edge makes plenty of each-way appeal. He was caught wide throughout when finishing third behind Orandi on Tuesday and did well to finish as close as he did. While seven furlongs is slightly sharper than ideal, his toughness and consistency make him a major player if the race develops into a stamina test in the closing stages.

Orandi commands respect after landing the big handicap on Tuesday but now carries a 7lb penalty from a wide draw, making life considerably tougher. Dunum is another to note, having won this race in 2023, though he will need to leave his below-par reappearance well behind.

Jagged Edge shaped much better than the bare result when third earlier in the week after racing wide throughout. He remains competitively treated and can reward each-way support if handling the drop back to 7f.

Gleneagle Bay had no luck in running on Tuesday yet still finished with plenty of promise. Back over his preferred trip and with a top jockey booked, he looks capable of reversing recent form. Pierre Royal is the main threat, while Jagged Edge offers solid each-way value.
