Grand Slam for Woods? All 4 Majors this season? 200/1
We wondered. We’re only human after all. Would the Tiger ever win another Major, to add to the 14 he has neatly tucked away? The answer came emphatically at Augusta National this afternoon, as he fought and eventually overcame a very powerful field to win his fifth Green Jacket.
Jack Nicklaus won the last of his record 18 Majors here in 1986, aged 46, and at just three years younger Woods has closed a Majors gap with the peerless Golden Bear that had looked for many years like never being narrowed.
Now Eldrick ‘Tiger’ Woods can set his sights on a glorious autumn to an already staggering career, and perhaps eat into Jack’s lead just a little more over the coming seasons. Fancy him to beat Jack’s record? That’s a 20/1 shot (19 or more Majors for Tiger).
Dogged with persistent injury and some well-publicised personal battles, Woods has done what the greats invariably do – write their own stunning, larger-than-life and scarely-believable headlines. Eleven years since his last Major championship win, Woods has bagged another.
22 years since putting on that iconic first Green Jacket, along comes a fifth.
There were joyous scenes at the 18th, as Woods celebrated with his family – and in a way we haven’t really seen throughout his stellar career. He was absolutely jubilant, and the sincerest and most respectful congratulations came from every corner of that verdant sporting temple that is Augusta.
There’s not a dry eye in the golfing, nay sporting world, tonight.
Tiger Woods – 72 hole score, -13, and a one-shot win over Dustin Johnson, Xander Scauffele, and Brooks Koepka.
Betfred spokesman Mark Pearson said, “Tiger was on a roll this week, and he may have waited 11 years but Woods winning was a major loss. Sometimes you just have to forget the dough and applaud greatness. One of the greatest sporting comebacks ever, vintage Tiger.”
Hear hear.
