Canadian Adam Svensson holds just a one-shot lead in the Sony Open in Hawaii despite a stunning nine-under-par opening round of 61 (Svensson 25/1 Winner Market).
Despite his flawless round, with included an eagle on the par-five ninth and was finished with his seventh birdie of the round on the last, the 25-year-old is only leading by a single shot.
“My speed was great,” he told Golf Channel. “I was around the hole, I hit 17 greens or something like that, so I gave myself a lot of opportunities and I came out with a 61.”
American Andrew Putnam, like Svensson another relatively unknown on the tour, had earlier shot a 62 at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.
Svensson is not getting carried away as he searches for his first ever PGA Tour title and knows there is a lot of golf to be played yet.
“Just stay patient. You hear a lot of people say that,” he said.
“Pars are great out here. The odd birdie here and there is great. So I’m just going to go out there and have fun tomorrow and enjoy it.”
American Ryder Cup star Matt Kuchar (Kucher 13/2 win market) is sat alone in third spot after a round of 63 with Jason Dufner and Brandt Snedeker among a group of players on four under.
England’s Ian Poulter and Luke Donald are both one under par further down the field with plenty to do if they are to have an impact on Sunday evening.
Three time Major champions Jordan Spieth suffered in the opening round as he looks to get his game back on track and he finished with a three over 73.
