The three-time major winner will finally get the chance to lead the European side after being a vice-captain at each of the last three editions.

Harrington (125/1 to win Open Championship) has also made six appearances as a player and knows how to win the competition, lifting the trophy on four occasions.

Team Europe lost the last Ryder Cup held in America in 2016 and Harrington insists he is fired up for the defence in Wisconsin.

Harrington was the first name mentioned to succeed Thomas Bjorn at the end of last year after the pair worked together to help Europe win by seven points at Le Golf National in Paris.

The European Tour committee of Bjorn, Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley selected Harrington and the 47-year-old cannot wait to start planning his selections.

“It is a tremendous honour to be named Ryder Cup captain and I am relishing the next 20 months as we work towards Whistling Straits and Europe’s defence of the trophy,” said Harrington after he was unveiled at Wentworth.

“I have played under, and been involved with, many wonderful European captains since I made my debut in the contest 20 years ago and I would like to think that my captaincy will be a mix of all of them. I am very much looking forward to taking on this role.”

Odds subject to change.
