Paul Casey says the Masters is the one major he can definitely win and hopes to finally make the breakthrough at Augusta National next month (Casey 28/1 to win the Masters).

A major has so far eluded the 41-year-old but following his defence of the Valspar Championship over the weekend, confidence is high that this could be the year.

Casey outplayed the likes of world number one Dustin Johnson as he held his nerve to win the Valspar and that will stand him in good stead for the Masters.

“Yes, I can win the Masters, but that’s probably the only major where I can look you in the eye and say that with total conviction,” he told reporters.

“At the other majors and at plenty of other tournaments, I see what the guys shoot, their winning scores and I think to myself, ‘I just can’t see how I could get to that number’.

“But I can see it at Augusta. In the last four years I’ve come away and looked at the winning total and thought that I could have shot that, with a little more luck, better decision-making or whatever. The important thing for me is that it was do-able.”

Casey does have the omens on his side as the last European to win the Masters, Sergio Garcia, was ranked 11th in the world heading into the event. The same as Casey now after his Valspar win saw him climb the rankings.

Even so the Englishman is well aware that the clock is ticking on his chances of winning a major.

“I know I haven’t got a lot of years left, and I need to get going,” he added.

Odds subject to change
