2020-21 UEFA Nations League, Group A4 preview: Switzerland vs. Spain – St. Jakob Park, Basel – Saturday, 14 November 2020 – 19:45 BST – Matchday 5 of 6

Switzerland vs Spain Preview

The focus will be on St. Jakob-Park, Basel when Switzerland host Spain in a bid to stave off elimination in Group A4. Although the Swiss did well in holding Germany to a 3-3 draw in their last Group outing, they still languish at the bottom of the cluster.

Spain on the other hand lead the Group with 7 points from their 4 games so far but have come out of an unexpected defeat to Ukraine in their last outing. Nevertheless the Spaniards will look to consolidate their position at the top while the hosts will battle it out to avoid ouster.

Luis Enrique's side are not yet upto the fluid best having won 2, drawn one and lost one of their 4 outings in the current edition of the Nations League while Saturday's hosts are yet to register a win and languish in the fourth place with barely 2 points. The Swiss have come out of fighting 3-3 draw in Germany last month and will expect to show the same spirit against the powerful visitors on Saturday.

The Switzerland attack will be led by Haris Seferovic who will have the company of Mario Gavranovic, both playingin strikers' roles. Benfica forward Seferovic has 9 goals and an assist from his last 18 outings and the hosts will bank on him to get goals.

Arsenal's Granit Xhaka and Borussia Mönchengladbach's Breel Embolo in the midfield and Xherdan Shaqiri in the wings will provide the required depth and experience for the Swiss. Ricardo Rodriguez, Basel defender Silvan Widmer and Nico Elvedi will mind things at the back.

Torino's Rodriguez will be the mainstay in the Swiss defense with a 90% pass success rate, 1.5 aerials win along with 2.5 tackles and 2 interceptions per game.

The Spain attack has been dealt a blow without 17-year old Barcelona prodigy Ansu Fati who is out for 4 months with a long-term injury.

But they still have the likes of Álvaro Morata of Juventus, Real Mardid's Marco AsensioReal Sociedad's Míkel Oyarzaba and Manchester City's Ferran Torres in their attacking ranks. Torres especially has been exceptional for City with 4 goals from his 9 games for the club. His pass accuracy is 85%, has 1.9 shots on target and 1.3 dribbles per game.

In defense the Spaniards have the towering figure of Sergio Ramos with a 93% pass success rate, 1.9 aerial wins and 1.9 clears per game while he has doubled up as a scorer getting 5 goals from his 17 games for his country. Pau Torres and Sevilla's Jesus Navas are important figures in the defense, both possessing abilities to move down the flanks and attack, too.

The Basel game promises to be a tight one given Switzerland's desperate position, but the newest UK bookmakers are wagering on a Spain win as the odds suggest. Spain have never lost to the Swiss in any of their 10 outings since 1970, winning eight of those.
