Southampton vs. Aston Villa – Villa hold a slight upper hand in a potentially even-stevens affair
Updated: 12/12/2024
2020-21 Premier League preview: Southampton vs. Aston Villa – St. Mary's stadium – Saturday, 30th January 2021 – 20:00 hrs BST
Southampton and Aston Villa will be looking to make amends for midweek Premier League losses when they lock horns at the St Mary's stadium on Saturday night.
Both sides are tied at same points (29) on the table in the 10th and 11th places with Villa having played a game less than their forthcoming rivals. With only a solitary win to show from their past six outings, the Saints have dropped down rapidly from a commanding 4th place in mid-December to a dismal 11th now.
The Villans' recent performances mirror those of their Saturday night's rivals, leaving them on the 10th spot presently after being in the Top 4 till October-end.
Southampton Premier League form: L/D/D/W/L/L

As for Southampton's team news, Kyle Walker-Peters may or may not be in for a start while Ryan Bertrand, back from suspension, looks certain to make one. A big boost for the Saints will be the return from injury of Nathan Redmond who was a second-half substitute in the 1-3 defeat to Arsenal but whether he will be in contention for his first start since October remains to be seen. In the meantime, the attack could be in the hands of Theo Walcott, Che Adams and Danny Ings while the in-form dead-ball specialist James Ward-Prowse will be a key figure in the mid-field space.
Villa's £16m acquisition from Marseille, Morgan Sanson, is in line for a debut though Dean Smith may not want him to start as of now. Smith may choose to rotate in the attack, with Bertrand Traore, Anwar El-Ghazi and Trezeguet all battling for a starting spot. Top-scorer Ollie Watkins will surely lead the line as he looks to find the back of the net for a third successive Premier League game for the first time.
Southampton probable starting XI:
McCarthy (goal); Valery, Bednarek, Stephens, Bertrand; Armstrong, Ward-Prowse, Diallo, Walcott; Adams, Ings
Aston Villa probable starting XI:
Martinez (goal); Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett; Luiz, McGinn; Trezeguet, Barkley, Grealish; Watkins
Dean Smith's men have not been impressive on the road, losing three of their away games in succession but may redeem themselves at the St. Mary's against a Southampton side not very high on confidence, too. A drawn match seems to be the most likely outcome.
