Son Heung-min at the Asian Cup: How many games will the Tottenham player miss?

Updated: 12/12/2024

He's the league's form player, rattling in six goals and laying on a further three assists in just five matches.

But come January Son Heung-min is set to miss a series of league fixtures as he prepares to take part in the Asian Cup with South Korea.

The call-up could have huge ramifications for Tottenham, the title race and the Fantasy Premier League.

Nearl 650,000 FPL managers currently have him in their teams, but will need to transfer the forward out ahead of Tottenham's Gameweek 23 fixture against Fulham.

How many games will Son Heung-min miss?

The good news for Spurs fans is that the club have negotiated with South Korea and the attacker will not take part in the East Asian nation's first two group fixtures against Kyrgyzstan and the Philippines.

This means that Son will be available for Tottenham's clash with Manchester United in Gameweek 22.

The bad news, however, is that South Korea are among the tournament favourites and stand a good chance of going the distance.

Should South Korea reach the Asian Cup final, Son Heung-min would miss the following games: Fulham (January 20), Watford (January 30) and Newcastle (February 2), as well as the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie with Chelsea.

If Spurs progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup, Son would also be out of contention.

Potential FPL replacements

Anthony Martial (£7.4m) and his Manchester United side set off on a winnable run of fixtures from Gameweek 23 onwards, facing Brighton, Burnley, Leicester and Fulham while Son takes part in the Asian Cup.

Lucas Moura (£6.9m) will likely enjoy more game time with Son out of the side and represents superb value at just £6.9m.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) has been consistently brilliant for Everton this season, picking up four double figure points totals. Remarkably he is owned by less than 7 per cent of players.
