Manchester City v Lyon Preview

Manchester City prepare themselves to face Lyon at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, Lisbon on the 15th August as firm favourites to progress to a rare Champions League semi-final.

Pep Guardiola's City have just come out of a memorable Round of 16 win over eleven-time champions Real Madrid on a aggregate of 4-2.

Lyon on the other hand have punched far above their weight in Europe's premier competition. The seventh-placed Ligue 1 French side sensationally eliminated Juventus to move into the final 8.

As for team news, ace City striker Sergio Aguero is expected to miss out again as he continues undergoing an operation on his meniscus. Benjamin Mendy is available after serving a suspension for yellow cards against Real Madrid.

Although Guardiola's men looked sharp in attack in their 2-1 second leg win over Real last week, they will be wary of a side who they could not beat in both their Group games.

Lyon managed to get the better of the Citizens in their backyard, the Etihad, 2-1 and drew 2-2 at home after leading twice.

City with their attacking riches in the likes of Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, Kevin de Bruyne, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva could be expected to be all over the Lyon defense for most of the game but it's the threat on the counter by the French side that could cause them problems.

Lyon have in their ranks players who are “hit-on-the-break” specialists. Moussa Dembele, Memphis Depay and Houssem Aouar are some names that have found goals regularly and got their club this far.

Dutch forward Depay has scored 9 league goals from 13 appearances and was also on target against Juventus, while French striker Moussa Dembele has netted 16 times this season.

For City, England forward Sterling has been a pivotal figure this season, proving his worth by netting the opener in the 2-1 victory over Real Madrid last Friday.

The 25-year-old international has scored four goals in his last three outings, which has taken his season's tally in all competitions to 30, and there is every chance he can add to that in Lisbon on the 15th.

The team news for Lyon is that the fitness of defenders Marcelo and Kenny Tete will be assessed before the Lisbon clash while fellow back Youssouf Kone is ruled out.

MAN CITY predicted line-up (4-3-3):

Ederson (goal); Walker, Fernandinho, Laporte, Joao Cancelo; De Bruyne, Rodri, D Silva; Foden, Gabriel Jesus, Sterling

LYON Predicted line-up (3-5-2):

Lopes (goal); Denayer, Marcelo, Marcal; Dubois, Caqueret, Bruno Guimaraes, Aouar, Cornet; Depay, Dembele
