Updated: 19/01/2025
Match preview and correct score predictions for Liverpool v West Brom.
Liverpool with 65 per cent possession could not break down the defensive organization structured by Jose Mourinho. In the end Liverpool had to be content with a 0-0 draw.
Expect the Jurgen Klopp's men to keep possession and go for an all out attack when they host 12th placed West Brom at Anfield on Saturday. But West Ham could well be prepared for such a thing. This was evident from their stoic performance against a marauding Tottenham attack last week in a tough 1-1 draw.
This would be West Brom's second Premier League encounter with a team from the top half. The other one being against Everton which they narrowly lost 1-2.
Evans Suspended
Baggies coach coach Tony Pulis will be banking on his men at the back – Craig Dawson, Gareth McAuley and Allan Nyom to put up a good show in the absence of key man, Johnny Evans, out on suspension. The tough 33-year old club veteran, Jonas Olsson, could be Evans' replacement at Anfield.
Pulis would be expecting his men to hit Liverpool on the counter and that is where aggressive wingers like James McClean and Nacer Chadli (with 5 goals, the Baggies highest scorer) would come in. Salomon Rondon's opportunism and striking skills also may come to the fore.
While Liverpool have performed well against the Big Boys of the League, viz. Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Leicester City and Manchester United, their outings with minions Burnley have resulted in a 0-2 defeat and against the 19th placed Swansea City a fortuitous 2-1 win.
So, going into the October 22 clash, Klopp will be a wary against a resilient West Brom side. Klopp will retain the same side that played against Manchester United and Swansea. For the goalkeeper's position he has reposed his faith in his £4.7m signing, 23-year old Loris Karius in place of Simon Mignolet. Clyne, Matip, Lovren, Milner, Emre Can, Henderson, Coutinho, Sadio Mane, Sturridge and Firmino should complete the starting XI.
Head to Head
A head to head comparison between these two teams for the last ten matches, shows West Brom as a difficult opponent to contend with. The Baggies and Liverpool have three wins each to their credit and four were draws. Astonishingly, of the last five matches, four have been drawn affairs dotted with a solitary Liverpool win of 2-1 way back in October 2014.
Bookmakers have placed their bets overwhelmingly on Liverpool given their current 4th position on the Premier League table and the advantage of playing at home. But a tough encounter could also be on the cards.
A point to note is that among all the teams of the bottom half, the Baggies have conceded the least number of goals (just 8).
