Introducing Serie A’s five top-goalscorers after ten games

Updated: 12/11/2024

When Cristiano Ronaldo joined Juventus in the summer, it sparked a knock-on effect that would have repercussions for the race to finish top scorer by the end of the 2018/19 campaign. His arrival in Turin allowed Gonzalo Higuain to join AC Milan, a move that would never have happened if it wasn’t for the desire of CR7 to try a different challenge in Italy.

Having consistently found the net at Real Madrid in huge numbers, Ronaldo will of course be favourite to finish as Capocannoniere this term. However he faces stern competition from last seasons joint winners of the award in Inter’s Mauro Icardi and Ciro Immobile of Lazio, and of course Higuain now that he has become Milan’s star player.

After ten games, there have been one or two surprise entries in the list while Higuain just misses out, and what follows is a look at the top five goalscorers in Serie A so far.

Krzysztof Piatek – 9 goals.

This previously unknown player arrived at Genoa from Polish outfit KS Cracovia in the summer, and very soon made a name for himself. Piatek needed no time at all to adjust to a new league, scoring in each of his first seven Serie A matches, the first player since Gabriel Batistuta scored in 11 consecutive games in 1994/95 to reach this figure.

Drawing international headlines, the 23-year-old became the first player in any of Europe’s top five leagues to reach ten goals in all competitions, and duly received his first call-up for Poland. Piatek would score in his first competitive match versus Portugal in the UEFA nations league, a fine way to cap off an explosive opening period in 2018/19.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 7 goals

Piatek must be looking over his shoulder as – after a traditionally slow start to the campaign – Ronaldo has begun to find top gear. With seven goals and four assists in his first ten league outings, it is clear that the superstar will be as important as expected for an already talent-laden Juventus squad, the number seven having found the net three times in his last two matches in Serie A.

One of those was an absolute wonder goal away to Empoli, a true delight for the hordes of CR7 fans that had scrambled for tickets at the 16,200 seater stadium in order to catch a glimpse of their hero. If Ronaldo’s importance to Juve was ever in question, it only takes a look at statistics that show he has taken 32 from 69 of the Old Lady’s total shots (46%) this term to confirm it.

Ciro Immobile – 6 goals

After having flopped abroad at Sevilla and Borussia Dortmund, striker Ciro Immobile finally seems to have found an environment which serves him perfectly at Lazio. The Italy international fired in 37 times in all competitions last term, his 29 league goals seeing him finish as joint top-scorer alongside Icardi. This season seems to be no different as – after having extended his contract until 2023 – he has already fired in six goals in nine league starts.

“I’m proud of my 100 games here,” Immobile declared after his side’s 3-1 win over Olympique Marseille in the Europa League. “Although with the goal it would’ve been perfect. Lazio are a family for me, I feel at home here.”

Lorenzo Insigne – 6 goals

Napoli’s Lorenzo Insigne has been given a new lease of life by boss Carlo Ancelotti, the experienced Coach deploying him in the number ten role rather than his traditional position on the wing. Such a tweak has paid dividends in some style, the Neapolitan star having already almost reached last season’s tally of eight goals after 36 starts, finding the net six times in just eight starts in the current campaign.

“I always had faith in myself, but this time the Coach put me a bit closer to the goal,” the forward revealed to Sky Italia after scoring versus Sassuolo. “That saves me a little effort in defence, but in return he asked me to be more precise and determined in my finishing. I am enjoying it more, I get to focus on one aspect and the fans love goals, so I love giving them goals to cheer.”

Mauro Icardi – 6

A striker that is ever-present in the top scorer charts, Inter’s Mauro Icardi has fired in six times in seven starts after struggling with injury in the early stages of this season. Any struggles are certainly behind him now, a game-winning brace versus SPAL followed up by a last-minute strike to nick a dramatic 1-0 win in the Milan derby in late October.

Now, Inter are level on points with Napoli in the league in addition to competing with Tottenham, Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven for a place in the Champions League knockout stages. Icardi will be vital for their chances of success this term, and Nerazzurri supporters will be keeping everything crossed that they can hang on to him at least in the short-term.
