Can Son Heung-Min step up for Tottenham again?

Updated: 19/09/2024

Tottenham Hotspur secured an impressive 1-0 win in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City on Tuesday. But it came at a cost.

Harry Kane injured his ankle after tackling by Fabian Delph and instantly went down the tunnel. There are fears the Spurs hitman will be out for the rest of the season now.

The England captain missed almost a month of action with another ankle problem earlier this year. Son Heung-Min stepped up to provide the goals then. Can he do it again?

He’s already on a roll

If Kane is out for a while, Mauricio Pochettino will be thankful that Son’s been back among the goals lately. The 26-year-old is 13/5 to open the scoring at Huddersfield Town this weekend.

He hadn’t scored for Spurs since February before netting the first-ever goal in the club’s new stadium against Crystal Palace. He followed that up with the winner against City on Tuesday.

It’s very handy that he has found some goalscoring form again. Other than Kane and Son, there aren’t many goals among the rest of the Spurs squad. Lucas Moura and Christian Eriksen are the only other players with more than five league goals this term.

Does he like being the main man?

There’s a sense that Son seemed to thrive when Kane got injured and he became the main man. He scored in four straight games from January to February without the England captain in the side.

When Kane returned to action, the South Korea star went on a six-game barren spell after going back to being part of the support act.

Now he’ll have another chance to take responsibility. With the race for the top four looking very tight and Spurs still 5/4 underdogs to qualify for the Champions League semi-finals, Son is going to be vital.
