Burnley vs Wolverhampton Preview
Sean Dyche's Burnley prepare themselves to host Wolverhampton for a critical Premier League clash at Turf Moor on Wednesday, July 15th.
This fixture carries some significance in light of the hosts' endeavors to break into the Top 8 and qualify for a Europa League entry.
Burnley are currently placed at 10th, but share equal points with 9th placed Arsenal and just 2 behind 8th placed Tottenham Hotspur's 52.
Barring a horrific spell from Dec 26 to Jan 11 when they lost four games on the trot, Sean Dyche's men have performed admirably, losing just one of their 13 Premier League outings since then.
Their only defeat was an inexplicable thrashing of 0-5 at the hands of Manchester City after returning from the pandemic break, but have gone through the next five games unbeaten.
Apart from victories over Watford, Crystal Palace and West Ham, the Clarets managed to hold champions Liverpool and a resurgent Sheffield to 1-1 draws.
Earlier in January they beat Leicester City and Manchester United and held Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to draws – all testimonies to good performances against top drawer sides.
As for team news going into the home clash, defenders Ben Mee and Matthew Lowton will not be able to feature owing to injuries. They are joined on the sidelines by midfielder Jack Cork and forward Ashley Barnes.
Barnes with 6 goals this season is one of Burnley's key men upfront but they will have folks like Chris Wood (11 goals) and Jay Rodriguez (8 goals) to trouble the Wolves' back line.
Dyche has been able to shore his defenses considerably in 2020. After conceding as many as 38 goals from their initial 23 Premier League games of the 2019-20 season, the Clarets have let in a mere 9 from their 12 outings following that.
Nuno Espírito Santo's Wolves will be arriving at Turf Moor all pumped up after a 3-0 home win over Everton at the Molineux stadium on Sunday.
The Wolves started their return from the break with a bang, beating West Ham, Bournemouth and Aston Villa on the trot, but crashed to defeats against Arsenal and Sheffield United. So the win against Everton was a morale booster going into the Burnley clash.
Wolves' blistering attack spearheaded by the likes of Raul Jimenez, Diogo Jota and the powerful and relentless Adama Traore will test the Burnley defense no end for sure.
But their forthcoming rivals will up to the task and probably not be fazed by Wolves' reputation of being a dangerous side (having beaten erstwhile champions Manchester City in both their home and away fixtures this season).
In fact, Burnley have a favorable recent history against Nuno Santo's men, winning 2-0 and drawing 1-1 against them in their previous two clashes in March 2019 and August 2019 respectively.
As far as the Wolves' fitness goes, Pedro Neto is a major doubt for Wednesday's clash after he appeared to a sustain a muscle injury against Everton. Adama Traore was deemed fit enough for the bench against Everton and could be given a recall.
Meanwhile, Daniel Podence who shone against the Toffees could keep his place in the XI.
The new UK betting sites odds are on the visitors to Turf Moor to take 3 points from the July 15th game. But the eventual result could be different from what the online bookmaker odds suggests, given how stubborn Burnley can be as opponents.
