Who are the top 5 Premier League January signings of all time?

Updated: 12/01/2025

Check out who made our winter wish-list

The January transfer window is a chance for clubs to take stock of their season and look to fill some much-needed gaps in their squads.

Whether it be finding the goalscorer to fire them to the title or grab a bargain to plug a leaky defence.

There have been plenty of big-money since the early-noughties arrival of the January window.

So we’ve racked our brains for the top five winter bargains of the Premier League era.

Christophe Dugarry – Bordeaux to Birmingham City (2003)

Long before Dimitar Berbatov brought his languid style to the Premier League – there was Christophe Dugarry.

The Frenchman was allegedly urged to make a move to England by former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier, and he didn’t disappoint!

The veteran was signed on a loan deal from Bordeaux and grabbed five vital goals that went on to help secure Brum’s top-flight status in the 2002-2003 season.

He’s a hero at St. Andrews!

Javier Mascherano – West Ham United to Liverpool (2007)

Carlos Tevez fired West Ham to safety in 2007, but Javier Mascherano was merely an onlooker during his brief spell at Upton Park.

The highly-rated Argentine was kept out of the Hammers side by Hayden Mullins.

But a move north to Merseyside became the making of the tough-tackling midfielder.

Mascherano ended the 2006-07 season playing in the Champions League Final for Liverpool.

Luis Suarez – Ajax to Liverpool (2011)

It’s a testament to how good Luis Suarez was at Anfield that the Kop’s former hero Fernando Torres was almost forgotten.

Suarez was the focal point in the Liverpool attack which so nearly carried them to the title in 2013/14.

He notched 31 goals that year and was sold to Barcelona for around £75 million in 2014.

Virgil van Dijk – Southampton to Liverpool (2018)

Liverpool seem to do good business in the winter window. This time it was Virgil van Dijk’s move from Southampton a year ago.

£75 million for a defender was unprecedented, but after some clever summer deals by Jurgen Klopp it looks inspired.

The Reds are currently four points clear at the top and are 8/11 for the Premier League title.

If they are to win it, then van Dijk could get the freedom of the city!

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Borussia Dortmund to Arsenal (2018)

“Yo Pierre, wanna come out here?!” That was the rallying cry from former Borussia Dortmund team-mate Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

A matter of days later, Aubamayang arrived – gold-plated Lamborghini in tow and he has ripped up the Premier League since.

The Gabon striker has notched 24 goals in 35 league games since last season. He’s currently the Prem’s joint-top scorer and is 5/2 to win the Golden Boot.
