Tom Scudamore: “It’s an honour to be asked to ride a Grand National winner”

Coral racing ambassador previews his Aintree rides
Winning the Ladbrokes trophy was marvellous. Everything went well and it was as straightforward as it looked.
As other horses were dropping away, my horse was travelling well within his comfort zone. Thomas Patrick was under pressure, and I was always very comfortable. It went like clockwork.
Sometimes when you win big races it doesn’t sink in straightaway but to be honest this one sunk in straightaway and I knew what a big deal it was. Maybe it’s because I’d won the race before? It gave me huge satisfaction.
I had a quiet Saturday night as I was doing light on Sunday at Leicester. It never stops. When you win races like that it always puts a spring in your step although I was brought quickly down to earth the very next race when I had a fall. That stops you getting carried away.
Saturday – Aintree
11.55 – The Grand Visir
He was a highly rated flat horse. He is 101 on the flat which shows you the level he’s on. Only six run in this race. My horse has schooled well and Ian Williams is in great form. Eldorado Allen sets a high standard, but I’m very happy to pick up the ride on The Grand Visir.
1.30 – Vieux Lion Rouge
He’s down to a winning mark and he’s had a wind op since his last run so hopefully that gets him back to form. Last year was a bit of a disappointment compared to his amazing year before. Hopefully he can bounce back to that good form. The plan will be to get him jumping and travelling and then get to the water and see where we are and go from there.
2.05 – One For Arthur
This is a cracking ride to pick up although he’s coming here off a 609 day layoff, so it will be tough.
It’s always an honour to be asked to ride a Grand National winner.
I schooled him before he won the Grand National and was going to ride him at Kelso but I couldn’t and Derek rode him instead and the rest is history. I’m keeping the seat warm for Derek, and it’s a pleasure to have been asked.
2.40 – Dance to Paris
She won his only start. She probably has a bit to find on his flat rating with the Alan King horse. She did it nicely last time so hopefully she can go well.
3.15 – Shanahan’s Turn
He was a good second in the Topham. His form isn’t that consistent but he showed a real aptitude over the fences that day.
There are only the 11 runners which for a Grand Sefton is a small field. He has that course and distance form, and if he can bounce back to that form he’d have a favourite’s chance.
