Three Napoli players who could down PSG tonight
Updated: 17/11/2024
Champions League is hotting up in Group C
Group C is finely poised going into a pivotal fourth match day.
Paris Saint-Germain are 9/1 to bag the Champions League trophy. But they’re in danger of an early elimination, star man Neymar has said they have to play like ‘it’s the last game of our lives’ in Naples.
Carlo Ancelotti's men are 7/4 to win the game and sit one place and a single point ahead in second. They know a victory could go a long way to ending PSG’s Champions League hopes for yet another year.
Liverpool occupy top spot in the group and will hope Napoli can do the business tonight. So we take a look at three players who could strike another blow to the French champions.
Piotr Zielinski
You can really see former manager Maurizio Sarri’s influence oozing out of Zielinski.
Sarri brought the Pole to Empoli on loan in 2014 and oversaw his transformation from fledgling attacking midfielder into a complete all-rounder.
The loss of Jorginho to Chelsea has given the 24-year-old added responsibility.
His versatility has seen him play on the right, left and in central midfield already this season under Ancelotti.
If he’s allowed to dictate the tempo then PSG could be in trouble.
Dries Mertens
Another man Sarri worked wonders with at Napoli. Mertens was an exciting winger for most of his career but is now one of Europe’s most deadly finishers.
He’s plundered 46 goals in the last two Serie A seasons and has seven in 11 league games this campaign.
The 31-year-old is truly in the prime of his career and his 77th minute strike looked to have won the game in Paris two weeks ago.
Keeping Mertens quiet could be key to a result for the Parisian’s.
Lorenzo Insigne
His role in the team has shifted from a creative influence into a serious goal-threat to form a threatening attacking trio alongside Mertens and Arkadiusz Milik.
Sarri started him from the left-hand side but he has been handed the striking role increasingly under Ancelotti.
Napoli’s fluidity in the last third means Insigne could pop up on left, right or as the number nine.
Thomas Tuchel may have an embarrassment of riches up front, but his defence will have to be wary of this thrilling Napoli attack.
