This week in the NBA: Derrick Rose blossoms again

Updated: 10/12/2024

Odds and preview of the NBA action

Another week and, as always, there’s plenty to talk about in the NBA. You have the good in Trae Young, the bad with Cleveland Cavaliers but also the downright inspiring in Derrick Rose.

The East is headed up by Toronto Raptors and Milwaukee Bucks losing just two games between them.

Golden State Warriors have muscled their way to the top in the West, followed by a strong looking Denver Nuggets side.

We take you through all the key moments from the week in the NBA…

Winners

Trae Young

The 20-year-old rookie is ripping it up for Atlanta Hawks at the moment.

Young hit 24 points against Cavs last week and followed it up with another 24 in the dominant victory over Miami Heat on Saturday.

He is fast becoming a three-point specialist in his debut year – Steph Curry’s record of 13 three-pointers in a game may come under threat sooner rather than later.

Losers

Cleveland Cavaliers

Any team would miss a player of LeBron James’ stature. But the Cavs are really struggling for form since the 33-year-old left for the L.A Lakers.

They are on the losers list for a second-successive week after only winning one game so far.

A rebuild is desperately needed. But with only five teams in the East with a positive win record, the Cavs still have a chance of turning things around.

Washington Wizards

Sitting just two positions above the Cavs are Washington Wizards.

They lost three games on the spin last week and shots were fired at the whole team from the players themselves.

There haven’t been many alterations in the roster in general manager Ernie Grunfield’s 15 season tenure.

The win over New York Knicks yesterday, will hopefully be a catalyst for better days. But you’re never too far from disaster in the capital.

Big Talking Point

Derrick Rose rolled back the years in Minnestoa Timberwolves’ win over Utah Jazz, scoring a massive 50 points.

This was a real throwback to the Rose we saw at the Chicago Bulls and the New York Knicks.

The second coming, so to speak, is a lot more calculated as he picks his moments, compared to the explosive style of his 20’s.

After suffering a torn ACL and meniscus between 2011 and 2014, this performance just whets the appetite for a Rose revival even more.
