Scu Says “I’m going into the big race full of confidence”

Updated: 14/12/2024

Daklondike and Eden Du Houx

I was really pleased with Daklondike winning the Tommy Whittle. David’s horses are running very well. It was a good couple of days for Caroline Tisdall as we won the Listed Bumper too at Ascot.

Daklondike is an enigma but he was on his best behaviour on Saturday. It was a great performance from him as he isn’t the most straightforward. His best years should be ahead of him if we can keep his mind in check.

Eden Du Houx has come on leaps and bounds. I liked him when he won round Plumpton but realistically he had to step up a long way, as it looked a very good bumper on paper at Ascot. So I wondered if he really had enough pace to win a race like that, but he did it and he did the hard way. He promises a lot for the future,

3.05 Kempton – King George – Thistlecrack

The King George is always a top race but this year it looks absolutely mouth-watering. You can make a case for every single horse. When you think that the two big outsiders on Boxing Day finished second and third last year. That shows you what sort of race we have in store.

I was pleased with Thistlecrack at Haydock. He feels like he’s improved since then which he’s going to have to. I went and sat on him last week and he looked as fit and well as I’ve ever seen him. I’m going into the race full of confidence.

I know generally how the race is likely to be run but I have a few scenarios in mind. It’s all about doing your homework and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition. So I know where I want to be and what I want to do, and how best to try and make the race suit me, but at the end of the day in reality the best horse will win.

He’s obviously won the race before which to some extent is a plus, but that has been and gone. It was two years ago. I suppose two years ago I went into the race not knowing if he would handle the track. Well he won it, so we know he handles the track. That’s the only plus. Other than that it’s a new race, new opposition, etc. Last year’s 4th was a step back in the right direction after he’d been disappointing at Newbury, and then he got injured again and that was that. So we are coming into the race this year in completely different shape to last year. We go there feeling like we are going to be competitive and I think he has a great chance.

1.20 Kempton – Warthog

It was great to get his head in front around Sandown last time. The handicapper has had his say since but there might be a little bit more improvement in him.
