Salford v Shrewsbury betting tips: Upset on the cards?

Updated: 20/11/2024

Odds and preview for FA Cup replay

Tonight’s televised football comes from the North West as National League Salford City go in search of an FA Cup scalp.

Owned by a number of Manchester United’s famous Class of ’92, Salford are looking to dump managerless League One outfit Shrewsbury Town out of the historic competition.

It’s all live on BT Sport 1 and kick-off is at 7.45pm.

Head-to-head

These sides drew 1-1 in the initial clash in Shropshire a fortnight ago.

Since that first-ever meeting, Salford have walloped Aldershot Town 4-0, while the Shrews have beaten Crewe Alexandra in the EFL Trophy and Rochdale in the league.

Likely XIs

Graham Alexander’s Salford have impressed this season. They’re playing some excellent football too as they seek promotion into the Football League.

He’s gone 4-4-2 for the best part of the campaign, and is unlikely to mix things up too much tonight.

That should see Adam Rooney again partner Rory Gaffney up front.

Shrewsbury are a little harder to predict, having parted ways with John Askey earlier this month.

They’ve yet to appoint his successor, with Danny Coyne in temporary charge. The Welshman went with a 4-1-3-2 against Rochdale, his choice is to go with the same again, or opt for a more defensive-minded approach given they’re away from home.

Key Battles

The first encounter was an evenly-matched affair, with Shrewsbury having the slightly better of proceedings.

But with Salford in such good form at Moor Lane, things could swing in favour of the National League side.

And they’ve got arguably the best player in either squad in Rooney. He’ll be targeted by the Salopian defence, and whoever comes out on top could dictate who goes through to the third round.

Match odds

There isn’t much in it when it comes to tonight’s odds. Shrewsbury are favourites at 31/20, with Salford at 9/5.

Five of the Shrews’ last six have seen both teams score. It’s 3/4 to happen again tonight.

But Salford have been excellent at the Moor Lane this term, winning eight of their 11 league games. They’re 17/4 to win with both teams to score.

Rooney has been firing in the goals for the Ammies this season. He’s on 17 for the season already, including the opener in the original tie at the New Meadow.

The former Aberdeen striker is 4/1 favourite to score first and 6/4 anytime. Lee Angol heads the betting for Salop, at 9/2 to break the deadlock and 8/5 anytime.
