Nuno: Wolves need to be more clinical

Updated: 19/11/2024

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo has admitted that his players need to take more chances in front of goal if they are to succeed in the Premier League. The Midlands club have managed to climb into the top-half of the table after their first 10 league fixtures, but have failed to find the back of the net in each of their last two games.

Making the jump from the Championship to the Premier League is one of the most difficult tasks that a football club can ever undertake. In recent years however, many newly-promoted clubs have exceeded expectations by over-performing during their first season in the English top-flight.

Like Watford and Newcastle before them, Wolves have all of the makings of a team that could not only survive in the Premier League, but compete with some of the league's more established clubs, and Nuno Espirito Santo could not have asked for a more perfect start to his 2018/19 campaign. In their opening six league matches, Wolves beat both West Ham and Burnley, and managed to take points from Everton, Man City, and Man United.

In their last two fixtures however, Wolves have appeared somewhat out of sorts, losing 2-0 to Watford and 1-0 to Brighton, despite creating multiple chances in both matches.

The results mark the first time that Nuno Espirito Santo has lost back-to-back fixtures since he took over at Wolves in 2017, and ahead of this weekend's clash with Spurs, the Portuguese has admitted that his players cannot allow themselves to lose focus.

“We have to react, I think we played well in the last two games we didn't deserve to lose so we have to maintain our highest standards,” he said.”Everybody was frustrated and disappointed, especially the players because they felt we were the better team and we had chances.

“I think how you play is very important. Of course the result can tell you a lot of things but it is how we play, how we create chances, how we manage to unbalance other teams and create opportunities and at the same time control our defence. We are optimists for the game [against Spurs].

“It is not the results, it is how you do things. We reacted from the Watford defeat when we didn't play well. We played well against Brighton so how we did it is what motivates us for the next game, it is not the results.”
