Joe Tizzard: “It’s been a big week for us – we’ve sold the cows!”

Latest news from the Tizzard stables

It was a big week for us as a family, and not just because of the horses.  We made the decision to sell the dairy herd that have been such a huge part of the farm here for many years, and this week the sale took place

There were several reasons why we took this decision, but the main one was that we wanted to concentrate fully on training the racehorses, and put all our time and effort into it.

The cows were the original farming business here, and got us to where we were, but as the horse side got bigger and busier, we needed to invest more in it.

We’ve kept a few beef cattle, but the dairy side took a lot of time, especially mine, and now we’ve given that up, we can all concentrate 100% on the racing.

Dad’s telling everyone that I won’t be having any free time, and that’s fine by me. I'll be riding out again, and going racing more, and I couldn’t be more excited about the future, as we’re pushing to get right to the top.

Things are going well on the course too

We’re enjoying a great run right now, with five winners last Sunday, another at Lingfield on Tuesday, and a four-timer at Exeter on Wednesday.

It’s great because we’ve had to be patient with the weather, waiting for the rain to come, and now we’re running some nice horses, they’re performing well, and they all seem to be feeding off each other.

We’re also using lots of different jockeys, and giving them all winners, which is pleasing as they are all confident riding for us, they know the horses are in good form.

Harry Kimber is a young lad doing extremely well and he’s ridden two winners from just three rides.

He was a schoolboy motocross champion, and the race craft he developed there comes across in his race riding, what he lacks in racecourse experience he gains from his motocross experience.

It may be a different type of horsepower, but he knows how to race, how to be competitive, and that comes across in his riding.

At the other end of the experience spectrum, Robbie Power came over to Exeter this week and reminded us just how good he is, riding three winners for us.

He’s particularly good riding young horses who are having their first run over hurdles or fences, he teaches them so much, builds their confidence, he’s as good as anyone out there right now.

Looking ahead

We also took Native River and Thistlecrack to Exeter on Wednesday, not so much for a racecourse gallop as such, but more to give them a day away from home.  Putting them into to the box, getting them to the racecourse, it was just breaking up their usual routine.

They had a two mile canter, quickening up into the straight, and both horses really enjoyed themselves, so it ticked a lot of boxes.

It’s amazing what that would have done to their fitness and their sharpness, and they both looked beautiful, it’s great to have them back, especially Thistlecrack.

Scu [Tom Scudamore] was absolutely beaming afterwards, it looked as if Thistlecrack had his old zest back.

It's all systems go for both of them for Haydock next weekend, but we just need some rain before then, as the last thing we need is the headache of quicker ground.

Right now it’s all systems go, they are both right where we want them, we just don’t want any firm in the going description.
