Gomes and Mina ready to start for Everton
Updated: 18/11/2024
Midfielder Andre Gomes and centre-back Yerry Mina could be set to make their debuts for Everton this weekend, when the Toffees host Crystal Palace this afternoon. Gomes and Mina both joined Everton from Barcelona during the summer transfer window, but are yet to feature for the club in a competitive match.
Everton emerged as one of the Premier League's most ambitious clubs during the summer transfer window, bringing in the likes of Richarlison, Bernard, and Chelsea's Kurt Zouma. The bulk of Everton's summer signings however, were brought in from La Liga giants Barcelona, with the Toffees snatching up permanent deals with Yerry Mina (27.3m) and Lucas Digne (18m), and agreeing a one-year loan deal with Andre Gomes (2m).
While Richarlison, Bernard, Digne and Zouma have all made an impact for Everton this season, Gomes and Mina are yet to grace the pitch for the Toffees. Gomes has been missing with a hamstring injury that he picked up during Barca's pre-season preparations, and Mina has been suffering with a foot injury that he sustained during the World Cup whilst representing international side Colombia.
It now appears that the pair could be set to make their domestic debut's this weekend, with Everton boss Marco Silva revealing that both Gomes and Mina played in a recent behind-closed-doors friendly match last week.
“Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes are okay,” said Silva. “Gomes trained this week and is progressing as well as we hoped. They will both be available for the match against Crystal Palace after the next (international) break.”
Everton have taken just 12 points from their first eight Premier League fixtures this season, leaving them 12th in the table heading into MD9. Along with Gomes and Mina, the Toffees have been without Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy and veteran centre-back Phil Jagielka, who could also return against Crystal Palace later today.
Marco Silva said of McCarthy: “I know his quality,” “Last season was a difficult season for him. When he started to play and get to a good moment he had a bad injury again, but he is a quality player.
“He is powerful, strong in the challenge as well and that is something we need in some moments in our middle zone because the profile of some of our other players is not this type of profile.
“Some of the others are not as strong in some challenges and James can give us that in some situations. But his quality is important as well.
“He is working hard to achieve a good physical condition.”
