Formula E tips: More thrills and spills in Marrakech

Updated: 20/11/2024

Preview and odds for round two

After a fascinating opening round of the season in Riyadh, the 2018-19 Formula E season moves on to Marrakech this weekend.

This season is the first to feature cars which can last the whole race, meaning drivers no longer need to switch vehicles half-way through.

That’s because this year’s series features the all-new Gen2 Formula E car.  It means faster cars, a tougher challenge for drivers and hopefully a better spectacle for the fans.

The early contenders

BMW Andretti’s Antonio Felix da Costa won the opener in Saudi Arabia, but he owed his win to the misfortune of others.

The DS Techeetah duo of Jean-Eric Vergne and Andre Lotterer were the quickest in Riyadh, and appear to have got to grips with the Gen2 car quickly.

Technical issues during the race meant they didn’t grab the win their pace suggested they deserved.

But the early promise has pushed reigning champion Vergne into 13/8 favouritism to win this season’s championship.

Da Costa is next in the betting at 10/3, with Lotterer third at 9/2.

It’s off to Marrakech

Round two should offer us more clues as to who is in best shape to become champion this season.

After a trip to the unknown circuit of Riyadh, this will be Formula E’s third visit to the Morocco circuit.

That should level the playing field. The track is wider, faster, and should produce better racing too.

Teams have had a month to learn more about this new generation of Formula E, and that could shake up the order. But plenty of eyes will be on Vergne and Lotterer after their performance in Saudi Arabia.

It was the Renault e.dams squad and Sebastien Buemi which took pole position in Morocco last season, however, before finishing second behind the Mahindra of Felix Rosenqvist.

After a dusty and somewhat chaotic start in the Middle East, many teams will see this weekend’s race as the real season-opener.
