Formula E Season Preview: Guide to all the new changes

Updated: 20/11/2024

Odds and tips for new Formula E season

Formula E returns for a fifth season in Saudi Arabia next weekend, with the new campaign promising to be the most exciting yet.

The action will be broadcast live on the BBC Sport website and iPlayer this year. And we've taken a look at the major changes set to be introduced on the track…

Next Generation Cars

The Gen2 Formula E cars make their debut in Saudi Arabia. They can go from 0-100kph in 2.8 second and have a top speed of 280kph.

The battery has also doubled in power, which means there’s no need to pull into the pit and swap cars during the race anymore.

Attack Mode

Ever used a speed boost in Mario Kart? That burst of extra speed has inspired Formula E’s new Attack Mode, which is designed to create more opportunities for overtaking.

When drivers go through a designated zone on the track, they’ll be able to activate Attack Mode with a button on their steering wheel to temporarily increases their car’s power.

The halo lights on the car will glow blue when they’re in Attack Mode, while virtual reality and cutting-edge graphics will be used to capture the thrill for fans.

More FanBoosts

Electric cars aren’t the only unique thing about Formula E. Fans can vote online to give their favourite driver a FanBoost, which provides their car with more power for five seconds. But it can only be used once during the race.

Three drivers have received a FanBoost for each race in years gone by. But that’s set to be increased to five this time around, creating even more drama.

Championship Odds

There are plenty of new faces on the paddock this season, but reigning champion Jean-Eric Vergne remains 3/1 favourite. The 2016-17 champ Lucas Di Grassi is hot on his heels as a 7/2 shot.

There’s also 7/1 about Sebastien Buemi in third place. Having previously driven for Toro Rosso in F1, he’s won more Formula E races than any other driver (12).
