Crowley calls it: “Young Rascal is probably my standout ride of the day.”

2016 champion jockey previews his weekend rides

I’ve had a good week and I’ve got a busy couple of days ahead at Newbury. An then I’m off to Australia on Sunday.

I’m heading down there for a couple of weeks, and have quite a few rides there on Wednesday, and then at Flemington on Saturday, which will help me prepare for the big ride on Muntahaa in the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday week.

I’m really looking forward to it. I think Muntahaa has a big chance.

Saturday – Newbury

1.10 – Shrewdness

It’s her first time out. She has a nice pedigree, but I haven’t ridden her at home.

William Haggas has had some decent first time out two year old winners this season so hopefully she can run a nice race.

1.40 – Boa Nova

He won on debut at Bath, but is another I haven’t ridden before.

It looks a competitive little nursery as you’d expect for the time of year. He should have a good each way chance.

2.20 – Young Rascal

This is a really nice ride to pick up. He won well last time in a Group Three and carries a penalty for that win.

He loves soft ground and was due to go to France on Arc weekend but the ground was too quick for him.

So we are coming here instead. He has Weekender to beat but I think he has a great chance. He’s probably my standout ride of the day.

2.50 – Fanaar

He should have won last time out but he got boxed in on the rail at Doncaster. The horse that beat him that day came out and won a Group race at Newmarket since then.

The handicapper has put him up 11lbs, so we’ve been forced to run in a Group race. I think he’s more than up to it and he has a very good chance in this. I will be disappointed if he doesn’t nearly win.

3.20 – Maktabba

She’s a Dansili filly. She goes really nicely at home and is from a good family. She’s got a chance.

In these types of race at this time of year you are never quite sure what you are up against but she should go well.

3.55 – Zofelle

She won very well on her only start. She was very impressive and was well backed that day.

The stable seem quite confident about her chance. I’m quite hopeful

4.30 – Restorer

I have a good season riding for Ian Williams; he has a good relationship with my agent.

I haven’t ridden this horse before but on form hopefully he’ll have a chance.

Looking back on the season

I’m really pleased with how the season has gone. I’ve only ridden the one Group 1 winner but I’ve won plenty of Group 2 and Group 3 races.

Winning the Ebor and the Wokingham were two of the highlights. So very happy with how it’s gone.
