Kyrgios vows to become a better pro - (2025)

Mexico Open winner Nick Kyrgios has admitted he needs to improve his professionalism and might start by hiring a new coach.
Nick Kyrgios overcame world number three Alexander Zverev 6-3 6-4 to land the Mexico Open title but the Australian believes he can improve further (Kyrgios 40/1 – Wimbledon 2019 Outright).
The 23-year-old has previously been as high as 16 in the ATP rankings but is currently outside the top 70, although his success in Acapulco should see him return to the top 30.
Kyrgios revealed he prepared for his final with Zverev by going jet skiing and he accepts that may not have been the wisest move despite the fact he landed the trophy.
“I need to be way more disciplined, way better professionally and do the right things,” he said.
“I don’t even have a coach, so maybe I start there.
“I went jet skiing at 5:30pm [before playing Zverev], so I don’t think that’s what a top 10 player would do.”
Kyrgios’ mentality has been questioned throughout his career and after his victory over Rafael Nadal earlier in the tournament, the Spanish star said “there’s a reason he is where he is” in the rankings, with the 17-time Grand Slam champion suggesting that with his talent he should have been more successful.
Kyrgios overcame three top-10 players on his way to the title in Mexico and will now bid for the Indian Wells crown and then the Miami Open, and he says his fifth ATP Tour title will provide a confidence boost for the months ahead.
He added: “I was really down and out and didn’t know what I was going to do, but you have a week like this and things can change.”
The next Grand Slam is the French Open and Kyrgios can be backed at 66/1 to take the title in Paris, with his best result to date two third round appearances in the clay-court major.
Nadal is the 10/11 favourite and Novak Djokovic is 15/8.
Odds subject to change.
