Race Preview

Astracornus looks to have plenty in his favour after two excellent efforts since entering handicap company. David Menuisier's gelding bolted up at Nottingham before being denied only by a nose in a steadily-run Newbury contest, shaping as though a stronger gallop and this slightly stiffer 1m3f test would suit ideally. Off just 1lb higher, he remains attractively treated and still has scope for further improvement.

Into The Light is an obvious danger for Charlie Appleby. His Sandown handicap debut has worked out exceptionally well, with the winner Lost Boys going on to land two major handicaps, including at Royal Ascot. He disappointed at the Royal meeting over 1m4f but was slowly away and never landed a meaningful challenge. The fitting of first-time headgear and the drop back to 1m3f could easily spark a return to his earlier promise.

Devil's Peak finally got his head in front at Newbury and may have turned a corner. John and Thady Gosden's gelding had been threatening to win for some time and looked game when getting up late over this trip. A 3lb rise makes life tougher, but he's still relatively unexposed over middle distances and James Doyle is an eye-catching booking.

Pierian is respected on handicap debut after two novice wins and a respectable Listed effort in France, while Waterford Castle has been knocking on the door all season and could benefit from the application of first-time blinkers after a string of runner-up finishes.

Pearl River has the ability to bounce back after finding a York handicap too demanding, while Steel Raven is another progressive type following his maiden success at Pontefract and could improve again on his handicap debut.

Value Angle

Devil's Peak still looks fairly treated despite his recent Newbury success. His stamina for this trip is proven and further improvement is possible now that he's gained confidence from breaking his maiden.

Astracornus has progressed rapidly since switching to handicaps and looks capable of taking another step forward under conditions that promise to suit perfectly. Into The Light rates the principal threat if rediscovering the form of his Sandown effort, while Devil's Peak can continue his improvement and makes plenty of each-way appeal.
