Defiantly looks primed to gain compensation after going down by just a head in the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot. Joseph O'Brien's lightly raced four-year-old proved beyond doubt that extreme distances suit him, travelling strongly throughout before only just failing to reel in the winner. A 4lb rise asks another question, but there still appears to be plenty of improvement to come over marathon trips.

Believitanducan arrives seeking a fourth successive Flat victory after a dominant display in the Northumberland Vase. Alan King's gelding has developed into one of the season's leading staying handicappers and is clearly thriving, although another 5lb rise and a very different test around Goodwood make life tougher. Even so, he's impossible to dismiss given his current form.

Valiancy rates the value alternative. William Haggas' gelding shaped better than the result when sixth at Royal Ascot over 1m6f and looked to be crying out for this longer trip. The return of cheekpieces, in which he won at Haydock, could also help him find the improvement needed to play a major role.

Annabel's Ghost caught the eye staying on into fifth in the Ascot Stakes and has claims if reproducing that effort, while Alphonse Le Grande showed signs of returning to form in the Northumberland Vase and is dangerously well handicapped if building on that performance.

Maxi King remains a reliable stayer after his Chester Cup second and is another capable of making the frame, while Highwind could also appreciate this searching stamina test.

Value Angle

Valiancy has always shaped as though a marathon trip would suit and his Royal Ascot effort hinted that 2m4f could unlock further improvement. Off a workable mark, he looks capable of outperforming his odds.

Defiantly produced one of the strongest staying handicap performances of the season when narrowly denied at Royal Ascot and can go one better here. Believitanducan is the obvious threat in his bid for a four-timer, while Valiancy is taken to improve significantly for the step up in distance.
