Will Andy Murray’s hip surgery extend his career? - (2025)

After only competing in seven tournaments in 2018, Andy Murray gave a tearful press conference on the eve of this year’s Australian Open, stating it could be his final tournament, despite his intentions to retire after Wimbledon this summer.
The former world number one lost his opening round match against Roberto Bautista Agut. Despite a trademark fightback, he lost in five sets.
Speaking after the match, Murray said he would need a “big operation” if he wanted to play again, and surgery was the only option if he wanted to extend his career past Wimbledon.
He also acknowledged that there’s a chance he wouldn’t come back and play after the operation.
The Scot’s post on Instagram confirmed he went through with the surgery.
Doubles specialist Bob Bryan has had similar surgery and he returned to Grand Slam action at the Australian Open this month, after aggravating his hip last May.
Bryan has said his hip has felt good since the surgery but also recognises that singles is a “different monster”.
“Those guys are really sliding around, killing themselves for four hours. Who knows if this joint would hold up.
“Will you have the explosiveness to be quick on the singles court? If you don’t have that, you’ll be exposed.”
Farewell?
It seems that Murray’s fairy tale ending of bowing out at Wimbledon (20/1 outright) is potentially off the cards, for the time being at least.
Should Murray make a comeback, we could potentially see him at Flushing Meadows, where he won his first Grand Slam back in 2012.
I think most tennis fans would agree that it would be ideal for Murray to retire on his own terms rather than having to say his goodbyes prematurely. There’s every chance Murray has already said his goodbyes, which would be a great shame.
Now the tennis world must wait and see if the three-time Grand Slam winner will take to the court once more.
