Jo-Wilfried Tsonga showed signs that he could put his injury issues behind him and launch a serious comeback in 2019 after winning his first ATP Tour title since 2017 at the Open Sud de France on Sunday.

The 33-year-old Frenchman has been a regular in the top-10 of the world rankings throughout his career, but always fell short in the Grand Slams with his closest to a major coming in the 2008 Australian Open when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the final.

Tsonga has since reached the semi-finals of both the French Open (100/1 French Open outright) and Wimbledon on two occasions and three US Open quarter-finals with his highest world ranking place being fifth, which came in 2012.

Injury problems have often hindered his progress with his most recent issues coming last year when he lost seven months of action because of a knee ailment which required surgery.

Tsonga is now back fit and, while he only made it to the second round of the Australian Open before again succumbing to eventual champion Djokovic, he appears to have found some form of old at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier over the past week.

Victories against players such as Gilles Simon and Jeremy Chardy gave him a place in the final, where he comfortably overcame Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4 6-2 in 73 minutes.

Tsonga was ranked at 210 in the world going into the tournament but will now set his sights on clambering back up at least into the top-50 where he remained from October 2007 until May 2018.

The likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have shown that long-term injuries cannot keep a good man down and, while he will no doubt struggle to overcome one of the top-ranked players in the Slams, a fully fit and in-form Tsonga is more than capable of pouncing on any slip-ups.

For now, Tsonga’s next job will be to overcome Italian Thomas Fabbiano in Wednesday’s first round clash at the ATP Rotterdam (Tsonga 1/7, Fabbiano 9/2 – Match Result).
