Murray Shows Class Despite Aussie Exit - (2025)

Andy Murray has hinted he is not done yet despite his Australian Open exit while Roger Federer eased through to round two.
Andy Murray’s battling five-set loss to Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round of the Australian Open proved just what a warrior he has been over the years.
Having slipped two sets behind and clearly hampered by a chronic hip problem, the 31-year-old showed all his resolve to level affairs and take the match into a decider.
It was not to be as the Spaniard upped his level and a drained Murray wilted to go down 6-4 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 in Melbourne.
The Scot had suggested ahead of the match that defeat might signal the end of his career even though he wanted to play on until Wimbledon.
There were a few more positive signs after the contest that he might look to prolong his career as he hinted that it might not be his last venture Down Under.
“Maybe I’ll see you again. I’ll do everything possible to try,” he told courtside reporter Mark Petchey.
“If I want to go again, I’ll need to have a big operation, which there’s no guarantee I’ll be able to come back from anyway, but I’ll give it my best shot.”
There were signs of the three-time Grand Slam winner’s undoubted quality as he played through the pain to produce some scintillating tennis in sets three and four and he is 10/1 to win a third title at SW19 this summer.
However, his future may well depend on how the hip responds after such a long and testing match.
One man who keeps defying his age is Roger Federer, with the Swiss legend eyeing a third straight Australian Open title.
The 37-year-old, who is priced at 7/2 to win a seventh Aussie crown in 2019, beat Uzbek Denis Istomin 6-3 6-4 6-4 in round one.
The Swiss ace looked his usual unflustered self and next faces Britain’s Dan Evans, who beat Japan’s Tatsumi Ito in straight sets (Evans 12/1, Federer 1/40 – Match Betting).
Odds subject to change.
