Nick Luck Racing Preview – Saturday 13th October 2018

Updated: 11/12/2024

Newmarket 1.50 – Waldstern

I loved Waldstern when he won his maiden, and he didn’t do too much wrong against Kadar next time. He is bred to stay well and looks to have a great attitude. This won’t be easy, but I trust this brother to Waldgeist to give a pretty good account.

Newmarket 2.25 – Western Australia

A slightly nutty selection, given my regard for both Persian King and Kadar, but Western Australia is simply way too big a price based on his run behind Madhmoon at Leopardstown. He was a bit of a sacrificial lamb for some really classy horses that day and should be able to snatch a place here at worst if ridden with a tiny bit more restraint.

Newmarket 3.00 – Anthony Van Dyck

It’s a price play, pure and simple. Anthony van Dyck might not have been quite as thrilling in his runs as either Sangarius or Too Darn Hot, but he’s got the best form and looks as tough as old boots. That might matter, with two stablemates in the piece to make this a proper grind if needs be. I love his recent conqueror, Quorto, and AVD can Frank the form.

Newmarket 3.40 Uber Cool/Precious Ramotswe

I was quite keen on Cleonte on the Racehour podcast and probably won’t leave him unbacked, but the ground is tightening up all the time. That shouldn’t inconvenience Uber Cool, who lowered the colours of yesterday’s impressive York winner Elegiac at Yarmouth, and gets in here very well on a strict reading of that form. Precious Ramotswe is a bit of a flyer,  but is completely unexposed at the trip, has a lovely pedigree and represents the best connections.

York 2.05 – Finniston Farm

Tom Dascombe’s horse has found his mojo again lately, and a three-pound nudge up the handicap might not be enough to stop him running a very bold race, albeit back up to slightly better company. The yard is going quite nicely and bad ground wouldn’t be an inconvenience on what we have seen so far.

York 2.40 – Cosmic Law

A bit risky against more progressive types, but there’s an argument to say that Cosmic Law has his ideal conditions for the first time since the Woodcote. He’s very talented on his day, there was enough encouragement from the last run and he can be better still.
