Tiger Woods is looking forward to featuring in this week’s Northern Trust (25/1 Outright) in New Jersey as he gets his bid for success in the FedEx Cup play-offs gets underway.
The 43-year-old former world number one has opted to limit his involvement in tournaments in 2019 having been blighted with injury issues over the years.
That appeared to pay off when his long road to recovery from back surgery saw him clinch his 15th major title – and first since 2008 – when he triumphed in the Masters at Augusta National in April.
However, Woods has only played four times since that win and three of those appearances were in the other major tournaments, where he didn’t fare as well.
But, having enjoyed a three-week break since missing the cut at the Open Championship, Woods is now focused on the Northern Trust at the Liberty National Golf Club.
The tournament is the first of three in the FedEx Cup play-offs with the BMW Championship and Tour Championship to follow.
Woods won the 2018 Tour Championship at East Lake but will need to put in good performances in both the Northern Trust (23/5 Top 5 Finish) and the BMW Championship because only the top-30 in the FedEx Cup standings will feature in the final event.
Woods, who is currently 27th in the rankings, recognises that it will be tough to play back-to-back tournaments in fairly quick succession having only played sporadically over the year, but he is adamant that he is in good shape.
“It’s just a matter of being consistent,” he said. “That’s one of the hardest things to accept as an older athlete is that you’re not going to be as consistent as you were at 23.
“I’m going to have my hot weeks. I’m going to be there in contention with a chance to win, and I will win tournaments. But there are times when I’m just not going to be there. And that wasn’t the case 20-odd years ago. I had a different body, and I was able to be a little bit more consistent.”
