Vegas delighted with ‘phenomenal round’

John Deere Classic leader Jhonattan Vegas says a re-setting of his posture has helped him discover some “magic” form.

Jhonattan Vegas (19/5 FAV – Outright Winner) says a tweak to his posture is the reason for his good form at the John Deere Classic after he opened up a one-shot at the halfway stage of the PGA Tour event.

Vegas had been in dreadful form leading into the event in Illinois, having missed the cut on his previous three outings, but he managed to post a solid four-under-par 69 to kick things off on Thursday.

However, it was a trip to the range that night which proved to be a huge turning point for the Venezuelan, who is chasing his fourth PGA Tour title and first since the 2017 RBC Canadian Open.

The 34-year-old made nine birdies in a bogey-free display on Friday to sign for a round of 62 and surge into the halfway lead on -13, one stroke clear of American Andrew Landry (7/1).

2009 US Open champion Lucas Glover (13/2) is a shot further back on -11 in third position, while the US quintet of Harold Varner III, Russell Henley, Daniel Berger, Cameron Tringale and Adam Schenk are all on -10.

Speaking about his performance on Friday, Vegas told the Golf Channel: “It was a phenomenal round. I felt absolutely in control today. Hit my irons really well, something I’ve been missing all year. It’s been a while since I had a good round like this.

“I found something really good on the range last night and carried it out onto the round. I’ve been struggling with my ball-striking all year, decided to re-set my posture and it was magic.”

Scotland’s Martin Laird (33/1) and Ireland’s Seamus Power (100/1) are the highest-placed British players on -8, leaving the duo in a 14-way share of 11th and five shots off the pace.
