Jordan Spieth is hoping for a decent showing in this week’s Wyndham Championship as he targets a place in the season-ending Tour Championship (Spieth 18/1 Outright Betting).
The 26-year-old’s one and only appearance at Greensboro came in 2013 when he lost out in a play-off to fellow Texan Patrick Reed but he has added the tournament to his 2019 schedule to try and make East Lake.
The North Carolina event is the final regular-season outing for the players before the FedEx Cup play-offs begin with The Northern Trust next week, where the top 125 players will tee it up.
That number will be cut to 70 for the BMW Championship before just the top-30 left standing arrive in Atlanta to bring the curtain down on another season across the Atlantic.
Spieth currently sits 67th in the standings meaning he will play in the opening play-off event and, barring a disaster, should make the second.
However, having missed the finale in 2018, the three-time major winner is eyeing a decent finish this week to push himself further up the rankings.
“I would like to make East Lake. That’s my goal now,” he said. “I really want to get back there.
“I didn’t like missing that last year, and I’m coming in further behind this year than I was last year.”
It is not the strongest line-up for a PGA Tour event at Sedgefield Country Club, with in-form Webb Simpson the 9/1 favourite ahead of 12/1 Hideki Matsuyama.
Collin Morikawa, 22, who won this year’s Barracuda Championship in his rookie year, is third in the market at 14/1 which proves that many of the big-name stars are resting ahead of the play-offs.
There are not too many British and Irish players in the field but England’s Paul Casey is favourite in that market at 21/20 ahead of Scottish duo Martin Laird (16/5) and Russell Knox (18/5).
