Poulter looks to end East Lake hoodoo in BMW

Updated: 09/12/2023

Ian Poulter has set his sights on qualifying for the Tour Championship at East Lake when he tees up at the BMW Championship this week (Poulter 50/1 to win outright).

The Englishman sits 43rd on the points list heading into this week’s tournament and it looks as though he will need a top-10 finish to have a chance of making it to Atalanta for the very first time (Poulter 21/15 for top 10 finish).

It was 10 years ago that Poulter just missed out at nearby course Cog Hill and he is hoping to go one step further over the next four days.

“I know I haven’t made it, and I know I’d like to get there because apparently the course is one that should suit my game,” Poulter said. “So I’m (No.) 43, I’m in the same position I probably was at Cog Hill where I need to do some work to make it there, and this is hopefully a good venue for me to obviously make my first appearance at East Lake if I play well enough.”

Meanwhile, Poulter is hoping to get some added inspiration from the last time he played at the Medinah Country Club back in 2012.

It was the scene of the European Ryder Cup team’s victory which was dubbed the ‘Miracle of Medina’ as they fought back on a dramatic day of singles on the Sunday.

Poulter was key to the turnaround and the win and hopes the memories can help spur him on.

“It was quite nice yesterday when I pulled up and sat down to register and looked behind the desk that I was signing and obviously there’s that shrine of memorabilia there from all the events that have been at Medinah in the past,” Poulter added.

“Just walking in the locker room, remembering the sing-song, the chants, the hug with Ollie, where my locker was. The memories start flooding back on what was an incredible week.”
