Rory McIlroy admits it will be a “tall order” to overhaul Dustin Johnson’s four-shot lead at WGC-Mexico and needs a fast start.

Rory McIlroy (4/1 WGC-Mexico Championship Outright) has promised to come out with an attacking mindset on the final day of the WGC-Mexico Championship at Chalpultepec Golf Club.

Dustin Johnson (1/6 fav Outright) sits at the top of the leaderboard after three exciting days of action in Central America.

The American is the only player to have won all four WGC titles while he has won this event on two occasions, and he holds a four-stroke lead after a third round of 66.

McIlroy mixed seven birdies with four bogeys to post a score of 68 on Saturday and he is four shots adrift of Johnson on 12 under.

The Northern Irishman admitted it will be tough to bridge the gap but insists he will come out fighting on Sunday.

“It’s there to attack for sure,” said McIlroy. “Obviously four shots behind DJ is going to be a tall order to overcome but I was happy with how I played the last ten holes.

“I need to get off to a better start tomorrow than I did today and if I can do that hopefully I’ll be right back in the tournament.”

Patrick Reed enjoyed a strong finish on day three as he birdied the last three holes to card a 64 but he still has some work to do and is back on nine under.

Sergio Garcia, Patrick Cantlay and Cameron Smith join Reed in a tie for third, while Ian Poulter and Kiradech Aphibarnrat are one stroke further back.

Johnson, who had gone 57 holes without a bogey at Chalpultepec before his double on the tenth, admits he will need to be at the top of his game on Sunday.

“You’re always pleased when you’ve got a nice lead going into Sunday,” Johnson said.

“I’m going to have to go out and play really well if I want to win tomorrow. I feel like the game is in really good form so it should be a lot of fun.”

Odds subject to change.
