McIlroy To Stay Patient In Major Hunt - (2025)

Rory McIlroy (12/1 Masters Outright) feels patience is the key to his game as he goes in search of an elusive first Masters title in April.
The 29-year-old finished in a tie for fourth on his debut at the restricted-field Sentry Tournament of Champions on Sunday after ending with a round of 72.
He could not match Xander Schauffele, who carded a superb 62 to earn a one-shot victory over fellow American Gary Woodland.
McIlroy has chosen to alter his schedule in 2019 and will play the majority of his golf on the PGA Tour, although he has opted out of another week in Hawaii at the Sony Open.
It has been a frustrating period for the Northern Irishman, with just one victory from 25 starts last year, and he has regularly struggled in the final round of events.
However, the four-time major winner was pleased with the way he hung in despite not being at his best.
“My attitude was much better today. I didn’t press at all, I was very patient,” he said after the tournament. “I obviously could have shot a better score, but I did what I wanted to do, gave myself plenty of chances, just couldn’t get the ball to drop.”
McIlroy missed out on Augusta glory when failing to chase down Patrick Reed over the final 18 holes in 2018 while he was also outdone in the final pairing at the Tour Championship, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and BMW PGA Championship.
However, the Ryder Cup ace is happy to keep plugging away in the hope that his time will come again.
“It’s just something I am going to have to persist with, keep putting myself in these situations,” he added.
Justin Thomas is the 13/2 favourite heading into this week’s Sony Open, with Betfred Bryson Dechambaeu 10/1 and Gary Woodland 12/1.
Odds subject to change.
