Koepka ready to ride the wave

American Brooks Koepka says he will do all he can to maintain his form at majors when he plays at the US Open after he won his second US PGA Championship (Koepka 6/1 to win).

The 29-year-old won his fourth major after holding off a late fightback from Dustin Johnson (8/1 to win the US Open) and secured a wire-to-wire victory at Bethpage Black.

The 2017 and 2018 US Open champion produced some of the best golf of his career last weekend but had a scare towards the end of his last round on Sunday.

Koepka started the final 18 holes with a seven-shot lead but saw his advantage cut to a single stroke after four bogeys from the 11th.

World number two Johnson had already cut the deficit after birdies at the fourth, sixth and ninth. However, he crumbled on the back nine and dropped shots on the 16th and 17th as Koepka eventually won by two shots.

Sunday’s win was Koepka’s eighth major success in eight starts and the Florida native is the first player to win both the US Open and PGA Championship in back-to-back years.

He will now start his preparations for the US Open which starts on June 13 at Pebble Beach and Koepka is confident he can maintain his form.

“Phenomenal. I think that’s a good word,” Koepka said. “Yeah, it’s been a hell of a run. It’s been fun. I’m trying not to let it stop. It’s super enjoyable and I’ll just try to ride that momentum going into Pebble. I mean four of eight, I like the way that sounds.

“I’m just glad we didn’t have to play any more holes. That was a stressful round of golf.

“I’m glad to have this trophy back in my hands. With the ‘DJ’ chants, I was aware of what was going on. He did an unbelievable job of putting pressure on me.

“When they started chanting for DJ on the 14th, it actually helped. It helped me focus. I think it was the best thing that could’ve happened.”
